Every rape and serious sexual assault case in the country is under review following the collapse of a number of high-profile trials in recent weeks, the Crown Prosecution Service has admitted.
Last night Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, revealed that that the review would involve every force in the country in an attempt to improve public confidence in the justice system.
It comes after four rape trials collapsed in the space of two months, when it was found that crucial evidence was disclosed just days before the cases were due to be heard in court.
Most recently, Oxford student Oliver Mears, 19, was cleared last week of rape after spending two years on bail, with Surrey Police facing fierce criticism from the judge for the delay in handing over evidence.
Mr Mears had been on bail for two years, but evidence that could have been considered vital to his defence counsel was only disclosed days beforehand.
Meanwhile, in January last year, the trial of fellow student Liam Allan, 22, was thrown out after it emerged that police had failed to disclose texts from a woman that proved he was innocent.
Mr Allan had been charged with 12 counts of rape and sexual assault.
He has since threatened to sue the Metropolitan Police over the handling of the case, with the force now investigating why the evidence was withheld.

Women apparently lie.
I’m shocked.
All muslim pedophiles are free to go?
Meanwhile, the authorities look the other way at Muslim grooming gangs.
Sometimes men rape women, and sometimes the system rapes men.
Both are evil things.
but the real scandal is how young girls and women are exploited daily by the muzzies and nothing is done about it...
Are these ALL the rape cases, or just the ‘rape-rape’ ones?
Gus:
How did you know she was lying?
Boones and Peters:
[in unison] She’s a woman.
William Devane and Carl Weathers are not that enlightened...
Your reply caused me to wonder when, exactly, the word “enlightened” came to mean “deluded.”

Hmmm! I hope that we are not related.:-)

Thanks nickcarraway.
This is what happens when "justice" becomes politicized. Everyone should get a fair trial, regardless of the charges. Disclosing crucial evidence a few days before trial and after waiting two years is reprehensible.
This shit happens all the time in courts across the United States. Its the major reason I no longer support the death penalty except in only very rare cases when the forensic evidence is overwhelming.
