Rarely has a president changed his party as fast and profoundly as Donald J. Trump. Love him or hate him, you can no longer argue his ability to bend an entire party to his will.
In the two and a half years since he announced his candidacy, he has moved the party away from decades of orthodoxy on trade, Russia, deficits and more and has helped make the law-and-order party skeptical of FBI leadership.
Perhaps the most profound thing Trump has done is show how many movement leaders and Republicans in Congress are out of touch with Republican voters:
Theres a massive cohort of Republican voters who are socially conservative and culturally reactionary but fiscally liberal, even if they don't know it. The base is very skeptical of trade deals convinced that ordinary Americans have lost at globalization. Huge swaths of Trump Country are dependent on Social Security, Medicaid and other government programs. While much of the GOP donor class is passionate about issues like criminal justice reform and expanded high-skilled immigration, many GOP voters want the exact opposite:
The ratio between the number of Republicans who think that way, versus number of conservatives who talk that way on cable TV or at the Capitol, is way out of whack. Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum were their lonely on-air champions. If Trump has tapped into a silent majority, its those voters the opposite of Paul Ryan voters, the opposite of Rubio, the opposite of Jeb. The source close to GOP leadership said: "All evidence in the last two years points to the fact that the R base was never as 'conservative' on economic policy as we portrayed them during the Obama years." Theres also tons of big money for liberalism, establishment conservatism and libertarianism.

Translation from LeftSpeak: "bend an entire party a party elite to his will the will of its rank and file".
LOL. This from the party which cheers for groups that murder police officers.

Liberals like to plagiarize don’t they?
No, what has happened is a hostile takeover of GOP by its rank-and-file.
I reject that argument entirely. If there was no Obama there would be no candidate Trump. If there was no Hillary there wouldnt be a President Trump.
The country was desperate for Trump because of those two.
Many of us regarded the neocon dogmas and Bohemian Grove rot with aversion and even hatred - and did so from the very beginning. It has taken this long to have a champion again, after the black day of January 20, 1989.
Trump did not change the base. He stripped the degenerate veneer off of the grifter elite.
Thanks mandaladon, but Axios sucks.
The party leadership as it was composed, part of what we all called the Uniparty, was the aberration, not Trump’s populism.
Axios is a dem, lib, funded fake news website that is no better than CNN. It just sounds like a teen age boy deodorant.
As always, the case in this article is overstated. Republicans have been for big spending since George Bush. Bush even tried to implement tariffs early in his presidency. The base has always been for enforcing immigration laws even if the Republican establishment has been against it. That is why we had the rebellions at the end of Bush’s presidency. The irony is that Trump is not an ideological person. He doesn’t have a well-thought out theory of government like Reagan did. For the most part, Trump will go along with whatever Republicanism currently is. He isn’t shaping it at all. But he is giving voice to the suppressed parts of the base on trade and immigration. Those voices were always there, however.
“All evidence in the last two years points to the fact that the R base was never as ‘conservative’ on economic policy as we portrayed them during the Obama years.”
Wasn’t it Obama who was going to get us into the Trans-Pacific Partnership? And isn’t it called something like “trade liberalization”? The point is globalism and global government.
Truth be (IMHO) President Trump is much more an old style Truman Democrat, than a Republican, that’s how he took over the blue collar working class. President Trump is also not a true small government politician, but is much less meddlesome to the average person than modern Democrats (who desire to run every aspect of our lives). This is shown in his rollback of regulations that hobble business and common folk and the (Kennedy style) tax cuts.
The modern Democrat party is now the party of the rich and privileged, who much prefer to lecture and condemn us “lowers” than actually help anybody (but themselves)... hence their disdain for the “deplorables”, that once were their core voters #RustyIrony. As the Democrat party moves further looney Left, their one core blue collar voters will move closer to the “Trump party” (formally known as the GOP).
Crony Capitalism has never been a Conservative value. The Bush family, starting in 1988, corrupted the GOP elite with their love of Crony Capitalism in the guide of "globalism". Trump is a return to a traditional GOP outlook on Globalism.
Trump nationalized anti- illegal immigration period.
The beauty of it went right to the core of red v blue.
Want to stop ms-13 AND punish blue states for Bobo?
Vote Trump.
Hell it’ll work again in 2020.
Axios...another plot to inform us of where Red Herring swim.
Where the heck was this guy the 8 years before Trump became President?
Talk about a cult of personality...
