On Tuesday night, President Trump delivers his State of the Union address, as have scores of presidents before him. But the performance likely won’t do what it was originally designed for: framing a productive debate between two branches of government about the nation’s direction.
The State of the Union is in a state of decay, and has been since well before the age of Trump.

Sorry, dumbass, that's not the state of the Union report was "originally designed for". In fact, the President can provide it in writing if he so desires.
The Constitution doesn't say one thing about framing a debate, productive or otherwise:
Article II, Section 3. [The President] shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient...
I hope Trump takes a good portion of time to talk about his plans to deal with the opioid crisis. I’m really sick of hearing about friends and children of friends dying.

Washington comPost neglects that for the first time in a LONG time the President is doing what the President IS originally designed for.
Presiding over the Congress and keeping them in line.
Where are the EOs ? Where are the Tsars ? Limited. He does (almost) exactly what the constitution says the position does.
And the SOTU is NOT about opening debate. It’s a progress report of our government to us, it’s boss.
And that may seem like a 90 minute ad for POTUS but it’s like saying that my 60 minute weekly progress meetings with my clients is an ad for me. It’s all about who is speaking, and their POV.
It really needs to be canned. Or taken off tv where it might regain some merit.
