Russian police are investigating whether three school attacks this week are connected after a teenager attacked a class with an axe and Molotov cocktail in the Buryatia region.
The instructor involved, Russian language and literature teacher Irina Ramenskaya, told Mash,
“I started to take the kids out. When I came out, I saw that a person was just chopping the kids with an axe,” she said. “I brought them back in the classroom, where everything was burning. I was bleeding. Before my eyes stood Anton with an axe.”
The Ulan-Ude incident came on the heels of a knife attack that shocked the country on Monday. Two 16-year-olds in Perm attacked a teacher and younger students, injuring 15.
One of the attackers had posted numerous videos to his social media account of the two teenage shooters who killed themselves and thirteen others during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in the United States.
On Wednesday, a student at a village school in the Chelyabinsk region injured a classmate with a knife in a fight.
Four teenagers were hospitalised after a student released tear gas at a school in Vladivostok in the far east on Friday.
Although Russia's tough gun laws have so far prevented the fatalities common in American school shootings, the knife and axe attacks have ignited a debate about school security and the influence of social media.
Officials blamed the Internet, where the government has cracked down on extremism as well as political dissent in recent years, as a cause of the spate of violence.
On Friday, Vladimir Putin's spokesman said the web brings not only good but also “evil, which sometimes appears in our lives in such an ugly and tragic way”. The young generation must be protected from this evil, he added.
