Some strange booms have shaken residents in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
The series of explosion-like sounds rattled residents from Waupun, Campbellsport and elsewhere Tuesday and sent Fond du Lac County sheriff's deputies out looking for a cause.
Geologists say the booms were likely a phenomenon commonly known as an ice quake.

Interesting. They shut down and deleted 65 comments. Wonder why
Wow!!!!!!!!!!
Is this the first time such a thing has ever happened???? [/s]
I lived 40 miles north of Green Bay from 1960-1970.
It happens most winters.
The ice breakup on the Oconto River could be heard all over town.
Yup. Happens every year. We also have thunder snow storms.
Once in a while you will get a sudden hard freeze or thaw in certain states and shortly thereafter have a bunch of natural gas explosions from broken pipes in bad places.
Lake farts.
In ice houses in MN, the lakes have been quite noisy. Quite thick now, clear hard ice, would probably support a tank.
It’s the Martians ,didn’t you see that Ton Cruise movie
Yrs. Very little snow this year. Several weeks of well below zero weather. Very thick and solid ice this year.
You mean it gets cold in Wisconsin during the winter?
Whoda thunkit?
Northern Winter; there is the sound of ice splitting trees in a snow covered forest, and the sight of your breath hanging frozen in the air. If it is still and not too windy the only movement is snow occasionally sliding or falling off the trees, and smoke or vapor rising from chimneys. No one is willingly outside except for fools who write descriptions of winter landscapes.
I encountered these a couple years ago up around Eau Claire. Something to do with ice sheets scraping against each other, sounded like thunder in middle of the night though. My group was there on a contract and we didn’t get much sleep while there, those things are like little sonic booms in the ground.
The world is now ending in Wisconsin, the land of my birth. The horror!! The land is literally breaking apart because it is too cold! I placed a phone call to family to offer a certified authentic Al Gore tear that has been carefully preserved to guarantee warmth in the northland (got it from some guru passing through California in January, 40 degrees, he was really cold, cost $5 bucks. Not a bad price to warm things up, eh.) My family laughed as they were at a polka party at the lake. I was informed that they already have enough Leinenkugels, brandy, brats & cheese to accomplish the feat of being warm in a cabin at -5 degrees.
Horror! No Mention of coal, wood or oil. The Cheeseheads are immune to the arctic ice. The glaciers came before and where are they now? Gone to the pages of Wikipedia. My call started breaking up and all I heard before it was cut off (probably due to freezing lines) were loud calls for another game of Euchre, how thick is the ice on Sisters lake, the size of the buck that Jeff got, and what are the Packers doing to do now...
Blessing to my northern brethren. I miss it much!

Had one in NJ, IIRC. Some years ago.
When we were kids, we used to stand on the Wisconsin river and watch giant cracks open up in the ice with the accompanying boom that was like slow thunder. It would scare the crap out of you.
