James Damore sues Google, alleging intolerance of white male conservatives
The Guardian ^ | Jan 08, 2018 | Julia Carrie Wong

Google is facing renewed controversy over its alleged intolerance toward conservatives at the company, after a class action lawsuit filed by former engineer James Damore disclosed almost 100 pages of screen shots of internal communications in which employees discuss sensitive political issues.

The evidence appended to the lawsuit, which was filed on Monday, includes a message from Rachel Whetstone, who worked as a senior Google executive after a career in the UK Conservative party, bemoaning “prejudiced and antagonistic” political discourse at the company.

Damore, who was fired in 2017 after writing a controversial memo about gender and technology, alleges in the lawsuit that white, male conservative employees at Google are “ostracized, belittled, and punished”.

The lawsuit claims that numerous Google managers maintained “blacklists” of conservative employees with whom they refused to work; that Google has a list of conservatives who are banned from visiting the campus; and that Google’s firings of Damore and the other named plaintiff, David Gudeman, were discriminatory.

“We look forward to defending against Mr Damore’s lawsuit in court,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

The company’s workforce, like much of the rest of the tech industry, is overwhelmingly white, Asian, and male. In 2017, the US Department of Labor accused Google of “extreme pay discrimination” against women, and a group of women have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company alleging systemic wage discrimination.

But the Damore lawsuit purports to expose a cultural bias toward promoting diversity and “social justice” that, the suit claims, has created a “protected, distorted bubble of groupthink”. Efforts to increase the representation of women and underrepresented racial minorities are cast in the suit as illegal discrimination against the majority.

This guy probably figured he was going to get in trouble so he collected lots of screenshots before he left. Smart move. I hope he gets to retire and lead a life of luxury on Google's dime.

I’d like to see the music industry get off its ass and sue the living F out of Youtube which is owned by Google. How this company can steal the copyrights of musicians and get away with it is beyond me. They got just about everything that’s ever been recorded - literally - on that site and they are making a fortune from the advertising. They steal records and use those records to make money. Any song, any album, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be on that site for anybody to download for free yet if the average Joe Schmoe goes to Piratebay and downloads a song he gets his ass sued off. How does this work? If I was a musician and released an album and found it on Youtube I would not hesitate for a second to sue the crap out of them, so why isn’t this going on? Look at record industry, it pretty much doesn’t exist anymore, nothing sells because it’s all on Youtube for free.

At some point, the Google lawyers will have a meeting with their clients and just suggest to pay this guy off. Even if it’s a hundred-million...just pay him and settle. If he has screen-shots and a few statements by others, it’s a case that Google can’t resolve or halt.

The problem for Google after paying this guy, is that a hundred more Damore-characters within Google will realize how easy it is to collect evidence and repeat the same formula for another hundred-million pay-off. Long-term, they’ve got a problem that won’t go away.

“Efforts to increase the representation of women and underrepresented racial minorities are cast in the suit as illegal discrimination against the majority.”

How about illegal discrimination against “better-qualified employees”? Affirmative action has morphed from selecting the minority from two equally-qualified candidates to selecting less-qualified minorities altogether.

As I have said before, Google has become very powerful because of the information they have been allowed to collect. They are using this information and their power in the internet sphere for partisan liberal war, to curb free speech and target conservative speech.

What Google needs is an in depth congressional and justice department investigation to see how far they have gone with this activism. A real proctological exam. They have also become sort of a powerful monopoly, and probably need to be changed to small independent companies.

My wife works for the gubmint. She is very conservative. She learned years ago to keep her mouth shut when it comes to politics. If you get outed as a conservative they will make it so you want to quit.

The practice has shifted towards requiring takedown notices. Major publishers are choosing in increasing numbers to leave You Tube alone.

Libertarians might say go ahead and let Google do that, but it will suffer if it is wrongheaded.

I’m not sure what to say. I will use Google, but refuse to worship Google and recognize its slant. If I want leads into more politically conservative things I will come here.

I don’t understand why. From what I read Youtube does this scam that is called “monetizing” videos by putting ads on them and they pay $2,000 for every thousand views a person gets and Youtube takes 45% of that which is absolutely ripping off whoever made the video and music because Youtube does absolutely nothing to promote those videos. These people involved in that are nuts because they could start their own websites and get 100% of the ad revenue. But the thing is where a band would make a ton of money in the past off say 6 million album sales now they only make $5,400 while Youtube that does absolutely nothing to promote that music is using that music to make money for themselves while offering that music for free to the public, it’s unreal how they get away with that crap and it makes me wonder if Google has Congress in their back pocket. It’s absolute clear cut copyright infringement.

I meant “and they pay $2,000 for every MILLION views”

What’s more Youtube-google have their sights set on a download option (of course, they’d have to jiggle with their code yet again to thwart sites that already permit users to download videos and audio from youtube).

And what of the rights of billions of non-professional users who’s videos are copied from youtube and re-uploaded (or even broadcast on national media without financial compensation or even the web clicks)?

Your copyright is generated at time at creation, hosting it on Youtube (or facebook) does not automatically make it public domain.

Youtube has put banner advertising on my videos that I get NO compensation for (I did not monetize).

either way youtube will spam (and make money off) your video with front loaded ads (monetized vids) or banners over your video (if the viewing user does not pay youtube to watch videos ad free).

About the only way to not have ads stapled to your video is to be blacklisted as something no company wants ties to.
