What's The Temperature Where You Are?
National Weather Service ^ | 12/31/17 | ROCKLOBSTER

Posted on 12/31/2017 3:01:17 PM PST by ROCKLOBSTER

Dangerously cold temperatures will be in place tonight to ring in the new year for many locations located east of the Rocky Mountains. Locations across the Northeast and as far south as Kansas into Ohio will be below zero at midnight with wind chills of -20 to -40 for many of these locations. Therefore, locations from northeastern Montana into portions of the Midwest and Northeast are under a Wind Chill Warning with Wind Chill Advisories in place as far south as the central Gulf Coast through Monday morning. Monday's highs will stay below freezing for much of Texas to the Carolinas which is a good 20 to 30 degrees below average.

Winter weather advisories are currently in effect for western and northern Texas as well as across the lower Mississippi valley where light accumulations of snow and freezing rain could cause slick conditions through Monday morning. Monday evening through Tuesday will be mostly dry across the lower 48 with the exception of rain showers for Florida and snow showers the Great Lakes. Snowfall accumulations downwind of the Great Lakes are expected to be locally heavier across the eastern U.P. of Michigan and east of Lakes Erie and Ontario where additional totals of roughly 6-12 inches are in the forecast through Tuesday evening.

Needless to say, temperatures will remain well below average for most locations east of the Rockies into the middle of the week but some moderation is expected across the central and northern High Plains starting Tuesday with downslope flow developing. The Southwest will remain warm and dry into the middle of the week with temperatures ranging between 5 to 15 degrees above early January normals.

Our family farm is in Friendship so when we visit, we spend a lot of time in Olean (”Weck” at Beef and Barrel!). Mom, 93, living in the old (1830s) farmhouse. We had heat installed in ‘96 so don’t worry as much as we used to when it was just an oil heater in the living room. Glad my brother and family moved in a couple years ago.

I recall driving over Big Lake from bar to bar — some on the shore, and some on islands — back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Fun times.

This New Years Day brings 14 degrees with a wind chill of -1 to the Allen, TX area. That’s pretty cold for these parts.

IMO; the heat and humidity was tougher to deal with in soviet Red Hampshire...central air is hard to find. Here in East Tennessee, I have central air AND a woodstove.

My place was built in 1856 and although I’ve made numerous improvements my coal stove is working like hell keeping it warm at minus 11, wish the very best for your mother.

Just thinking your mom must be about up to her eyeballs in snow as they’ve been getting hammered daily in that area, good that she has family with her.

You’d really like mine. He’s a black and white mantled Dane with white feet, a huge white chest, and a white muzzle. All in all, he looks like a giant black and white beagle. Women of all ages, from 4 to 94, can’t resist him.

New Years morning I’ll be running the Atlanta Resolution 5K race (3 miles). It will be in the 20’s.

Good luck!

(I'll be running the wood stove, zero, single numbers if we're lucky)

I went to the Benatar/Giraldo show a couple years ago in a small venue. It was very good: between short sets they talked about their beginnings. An intimate and entertaining evening. Well, as intimate as it could be with a couple thousand people, anyway...

I started with 2 packages 2 years age. I captured one of my own swarms and had three going into winter. I treat for mites but one was looking like it had low numbers. Condensation and freeze-thaw-refrezzes in the spring are killers. 3 degrees this morning. If they are alive they are clustered tighter than Dick’s hat band right now! Mine were swarm crazy this spring. (due to my ignorance) I could have given you another batch.

I only have about a half a quart of eatin honey left so spring time needs to hurry up. Imagine huddling together NAKED with 1000-2000 females and having to writhe around and vibrate so much that the whole group stays 97 degrees inside of a box thats outside in this weather!?!?

Heh....1000-2000 naked ladies vibrating around me? Might be freaky fun...or it could be a winter long nightmare. Last summer we had two hives and I caught the drones in one hive all smoking cigars, drinking beers and looking at videos of naked queen bees......pretty sure the gals tossed all of them....then I discovered the hive ‘absconded’ in fall. Ungrateful women all left for some other harem. My buddy and I are starting to think we might not be worthy.

I had a lot of surfer friends. When the weather and waves were good for them, it was bad for me and vice versa.

I flew hang gliders, initially trained at Little Black Mountain in Ranch Penasquitos.

Stored my glider and flew Torrey Pines Glider Port (painted their building sign).

Other sights I flew were Edwards and the E at Lake Elsinore, Mt. Laguna, Big Black, Blossom Valley, Horse Canyon, Soboba.

Favorite was just being a Torrey Rat.
