Religious schools, homeschoolers to get a boost in GOP tax plan, thanks to Ted Cruz and Mike Pence

Parents would get new federal tax breaks for sending their children to private or religious schools or teaching them at home if the final Republican tax overhaul bill becomes law.

For that, they can thank Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who offered the original amendment to extend 529 college savings plans to grade school and high school, including costs for homeschooling.

“The amendment, which would allow $10,000 per child to be distributed from tax-privileged 529 savings plans each year, was included in Friday’s joint House-Senate conference bill. It would represent a tax cut of about $500 billion over 10 years, according to Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation.”

Why not? Parents who send their children to private schools or home school are forced to pay for the public schools anyway. It is about time they receive at least a partially offsetting tax benefit.

Maybe seniors and empty nesters should be included as well.

Seniors can contribute to a child or grandchild’s 529 and use it for a tax deduction for college costs already.

And the best part is that it would annoy the hell out of the left.

Speaking of education, there’s a little nugget buried deep in the bill (assuming it’s still there) that has professorial heads exploding:

I’m surprised anyone is saying anything nice about Cruz.

Didn’t we learn in the last election cycle that Lyin’ Ted is Satan incarnate?

No, we learned that he is not qualified to be president.

Lots of people aren’t qualified to be president.

That alone isn’t reason to call him a liar, to ridicule him as a phony, to damn him as an evil person, to dismiss him as a RINO, to mock everything about him.

I’ve been with FR for a LONG LONG time. Never saw such seething hatred toward *anyone* like I saw for Cruz. Totally pathetic, the hatred toward this good Conservative representative.

I agree. I was disappointed with him at the convention and I am glad that Trump won, but I always considered Cruz an excellent senator. I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the Supreme court. I still like the guy.

Another point of control for the federal government - in an area, education, that they have no constitutional authority to be involved with in the first place.

No surprise at all to me. It is obvious that there are a lot of leftist trolls on FR.
