Administration officials are planning to stop spouses of thousands of immigrant workers from getting jobs in the United States, CNN is reporting.

The spouses of H-1B visa holders waiting for green cards have been permitted to work in the U.S. on H-4 department visas since 2015, according to the news network.

But now the Department of Homeland Security said it is planning to do away with that rule.

It said it was acting "in light of" the "Buy American, Hire American" executive order signed by President Donald Trump in April, CNN said. Under that order, the H-1B visa program for skilled workers will be reviewed in an effort to reform it.

They need something to do. If he plans to end the program they may as well do something while here.

The spouses of H-1B visa holders waiting for green cards...

Green Cards? I thought only permanent legal residents got Green Cards. H-1B is a temporary work visa.

I think a ‘green card’ is a work permit and not conditional upon residency.

I think.

Most of them that I’m aware of are working as part-time cashiers at Sears or Giant Eagle.

Many guys on H1Bs ask their employers to sponsor them for green cards. The wait is rather long, but a considerable number get permanent residence.

Before I was displaced by one of these cheap-a$$ H1B guys, I know that a lot of these "braceros" would team up in groups of 3 or more so they could afford to rent an apartment in even the cheaper parts of the Bay Area. So, I can imagine how difficult it must be on 1 salary. Not that I give a rat's rear end, mind you.

(And yes, I am and remain bitter about the H1B invasion of the past decade or so)

You and I don’t.

Corporations are all to happy to pay immigrants less than they’d need to pay a citizen, however.

This is the cheap labor express we always hear about. The democrats want the immigrant votes. The GOPe want to earn favors with big business. (usually campaign contributions, or positions on boards, etc...)

No. The way this used to work was that the H1B holder could bring his wife and children on an H4 visa. The H4 visa allowed them to live in the U.S. so long as the husband’s H1B was valid. But they were not allowed to work.

Obama arbitrarily changed this with a “stroke of the pen” move three years ago (a la DACA). Trump is just reverting to the law as it was actually written by Congress.

Granted this sucks if you are that wife on H4. You are no doubt feeling jerked around and unsure exactly how you can comply with ever-changing law.
