Reg, IMO, the best sub in gbro is at Giacomo’s.

The bread tastes funny. The tomato has been rotten the last two times I went to Subway.

The sandwich is now mostly bread and a little stuff in the middle. You can pile on the veggies and the condiments, but the meat and cheese? Slim pickings.

I liked their meatball sandwich, but now the meatballs are smaller and there’s little sauce. The upside is they charge only $2.99 for it.

It’s a mixed bag. I still go there occasionally.

All the ones around here we’re snatched up by an Indian family that cut the quality to the bone. They then used the stores as a way to help their family back in India come to America via chain migration by giving them jobs here.

Now the stores are all grimy, poorly maintained, and the portions so small and sickly looking.

If we’re not talking franchise that opens up a lot of options. Mama Ginna’s in Summerfield doesn’t suck either.

The places stink. As we used to say, I can’t get the smell.

I stopped going to Subway (not that it was somewhere I went regularly) when the whole Jared stuff came out... especially after it came out that folks inside the company had reported his behavior up the chain and nothing happened about it.

At least 3 times over the years are known instances where the Subway corporation was notified of Jared’s behavior, and did nothing.

“As early as 2004, according to the lawsuit, Subway’s senior vice president of marketing was told that Fogle approached a young girl for a sex act at a Subway event in Las Vegas. Subway sent a public relations manager to ask Fogle and a franchisee about the incident. Subway did not contact the girl and did nothing more, the suit alleges.

In 2008, the suit alleges, Cindy Mills, a franchise owner in Florida, told former Subway CEO Jeff Moody that she had a disturbing conversation with Fogle in which he told her he had sex with minors and liked them young.

In 2011, the suit says, a Florida journalist made a complaint through Subway’s website, reporting that Fogle told her he is interested in children.”

Or am I just blessed that I live in the northeast, where there’s one on practically every other street corner??

I grew up in CT when Subway was starting to expand. There are/were great grinder shops in Connecticut, like Rosa's Deli in Wallingford, and the now closed Angelo's Pizza in North Haven. It is funny that CT spawned Subway out of Milford (near New Haven!) when there were so many better places.

Here is the secret to their early success, partially used today.

Cheap cost of entry, easy to get a franchise.

Heavy use of two-for-one coupons, and a cheap loss leader sub.

In those days, they were one of the few places open late at night (in Wallingford, it was them or Mr. Donut). Combine that with HEAVY promotion on hard rock FM radio (WPLR-FM), and they had a huge following of adolescent/20 something partiers, potheads with the munchies on Friday and Saturday nights.

If Domino's built an empire out of fast, cheap delivery, Subway built its franchise out of late night fast munchies combined with lunch friendly coupons, NOT out of great food.

The meat portions keep getting smaller.

I completely agree. There is a Subway near where I work that I used to frequent for lunch. After too many "bread sandwiches" disguised as an Italian club, I found another place for lunch.

Or, as the late, great Clara Peller would have said:

Do you mean like the decision to have Ramadan menu items in the franchises which is what chased me out of there business? Since they started offering the feeding needs of people that have openly attacked the US for our religious beliefs, and tortured and murdered many, I no longer see them as a food service. They are now off my list.

Remember these guys from a couple years back (Jos Banks)? Who bought there at regular prices?

Nobody! I bet they sell next to nothing at regular price. I bought three pairs of slacks there a couple of months ago. Buy one get two free. At $385 that seemed about right. Very nice and well made pants but you have to be out of your mind to pay over $1000 for three pairs of dress pants.

Here every subway employee is middle eastern as well. A bit outside of this area they are once again Hispanic.

I am concerned about their meat being substandard, not that I would eat it, because if you ask for a (veg) cheese sandwich the amount of cheese given is about one millimeter, whereas the meat isn’t visible outside the bun. You can’t destroy cheese as much I guess and if you wish enough cheese to actually taste it, you have to ask for at least double cheese. So the meat must be real crap.

Yes, their food is cr*p, pardon my French. Lab analysis by a British newspaper revealed that their “chicken” was over 50% soy. When asked to comment, Subway mgmt. refused. Now they’re suing the paper for publishing the results.

Subway has a good product. I would order more often if they had drive thrus, but so many of them don’t.

Years ago they had cards which entitled you to a free sandwich after so many paid ones (maybe 8). When I had a card filled I went to the nearest Subway which had a new owner, an Indian. He made a big fuss over honoring the card, finally did so very reluctantly and wouldn’t let me have a free drink (previously that had been part of the deal). Way to ensure I would never go back there. Maybe the jerk thought I was from a lower caste than he was.
