Sessions hints at crackdown on recreational pot, affecting California, other states

Attorney General Jeff Sessions hinted Wednesday that the Justice Department may take a tougher stance on recreational marijuana in the near future, a change in policy that would have a significant impact on the five states plus the District of Columbia that already allow the drug to be used for more than medicinal purposes.

California is scheduled to join that group on Jan. 1.

Sessions and other DOJ officials previously indicated they would continue the policy laid out by the department under former President Barack Obama, which in essence allows state officials leeway in how they deal with the drug as long as they meet certain standards, like keeping cannabis out of the hands of minors, keeping it from crossing into states where it isn’t legal and preventing drugged driving.

Marijuana, however, remains illegal under federal law, and there was always the possibility the Trump administration could crack down.

“In fact, we’re looking at that very hard right now, we had a meeting yesterday and talked about it at some length,” Sessions said at a press conference Wednesday. “It’s my view that the use of marijuana is detrimental, and we should not give encouragement in any way to it, and it represents a federal violation, which is in the law and is subject to being enforced.”

“We are working our way through to a rational policy, but I don’t want to suggest in any way that this department believes that marijuana is harmless and people should not avoid it,” the attorney general added, noting that DOJ was also considering how to deal with opiods and other drugs.

Ian Prior, principal deputy director of public affairs at DOJ, declined to comment on what a new “rational policy” might look like or when it might be enforced.

Picking and choosing which law to enforce is something I’d expected from Holder and Obama. The solution is to change the law. Perhaps a 6 month warning of impending enforcment so Congress change the law.

The cartels, the alcohol companies and pharmaceuticals all have a lot to lose if marijuana is legal.

I disagree. If/When the Fed relaxes all sanctions against pot (especially banking restrictions), these coprorations - including the cartels - will be mass producing in no time flat.

There was a 200+ post thread about that opinion piece just recently.

I found this editorial was filled with fallacious arguments & dubious sources. YMMV, of course.

I put this in place 1001 is far as important.

I would generally agree with that. But, I'm concerned about what I am reading about Colorado. Driving fatalities caused by stoners has doubled, 71% increase in use in K-12, etc. I think this will probably pass in my state next general election and I'm not really in favor of it.

Having said that, I believe that the DEA and the War on Drugs has been pretty much a bust. Drug use has just grown beyond the point where governments can be effective in controlling it. I suspect that whatever Sessions comes up with will be equally ineffective.

The pharmaceuticals will farm marijuana instead of expensive, addictive opiates?

Pot creates slackers. My guess is that 100% of homeless smoke pot. It also has an incredible ability to stimulate denial. The place that denial shines brightest is when a pot smoker says it is not physically addictive, I can quit any time I want.

It is mentally addictive, like most drugs, and they can't want anything but more pot. It's all about dopamine.

And couches.

Btw, my sister-in-law has lived in Boulder Colorado for 25+ years. I asked her point blank last year if she has observed any problems since cannabis was legalized. She told us the only thing she has seen is that kids in public school no longer have to supply crayons, tissues, from home anymore. As I understand it all taxes from cannabis sales are supposed to go to education (with progressives who knows, right lol) & it appears to me that’s what’s happening.

This was one of the main reasons pot was legalized. For tax revenue. Forget for a moment the losses and expenses that a drugged out proletariat will cost Colorado in the long run, for the time being the tax money is wonderful.

Until you realize that more taxes leads to more spending which leads to more government.

Sessions getting on with the really important stuff ... wherein he does not have to come off vacation. He can smell pot heads miles away and is determined to put them in their place before they can do any real harm to the nation like revealing SAP and other classified materials to the world ...

I’m no fan of pot usage, but Jeff Sessions shouldn’t be doing this. Let the states who legalized it use their weed.

Beauregard Barney Fife Sessions is now going after pot dealers where pot is legal. What a disappointment this wimp has been. If Mueller ever gets something on Trump, Sessions will be the cause.
The DOJ is still being run by Obama holdovers. Never too late to fire the jerk.

They sure will. Marijuana is a billion dollar industry. Big Pharma already has the sales and marketing in place for opiates. They can dial it down for pot. Make a ton more money. No reason why they can’t poison American any which way they can.

You’ll get no argument from regarding progressive taxation & it’s destructiveness.

“Forget for a moment the losses and expenses that a drugged out proletariat will cost Colorado in the long run,”

Oh I will because I don’t believe there will be a “drugged out proletariat”. In fact, I find that notion hilarious.

When alcohol prohibition ended the wasn’t suddenly a “drunken proletariat”. There isn’t going to be a “stoned proletariat” after cannabis is legalized in the states & there isn’t one now in any of the legal states. The notion that everyone is going to start using cannabis is laughable at best, IMO.

I live in Nevada. About 2 years ago, the Legislature voted to give Illegals driver’s licenses. Then they voted in ‘recreational pot.

The voters were told that giving the illegals driver’s licenses ‘would mean THEY would get insurance”, etc.

Since that time period began, MY UNINSURED motorist has gone from 28% of the premium to 48% of the premium.

MY last accident was Oct 1966. Last ticket was ‘seat belts’ & was over 14 years ago. This is costing me much more $$$ than my Soc Sec increases annually. Drugs & pot are a menace all around this state.
