To a Liberal like Gardiner Harris, the concept of a hugely “bloated, unaffordable bureaucracy” NEVER enters his/her little walnut brain. You know....”money grows on trees” to a liberal.
The “State Department” founded in 1789 spends 47.4 billion each year and has 30,266 employees who’s “average” pay is bumping up against 100k. They allegedly administer to affairs between the US & 180 countries.
In lieu of these facts, Gardiner Harris’s article in the Slimes is an atrocity. The American People cannot afford 30,266 100,000 dollar a year “bureaucrats” to essentially do very little. I say cut em down to 15,000.Go T-Rex!
Those are the equivalent of Prez Ford’s whip inflation now (WIN) buttons.

I can see their usefulness and importance. Government is a top down entity. specialized secretaries are needed for regions and topics as a whole. One person cannot do or decide it all .... just keep the oversight working properly and it’s okay.
Most of the top Latino and African American(I think that means Negroes) employees are political and affirmative action hires whose ability to do the job was not deemed relevant or whose job was to just decorate the office and constantly check for Party Correctness..

I think you put your finger on a key part of the problem at the State Dept.
It also made me laugh to read some of them have been re-assigned to help clear the State Dept's FOIA backlog.
