According to a report from AL.com’s Amy Yurkanin, a woman who sued the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 2001 over sexual abuse she claimed to have suffered as a 15-year-old ripped Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Doug Jones for “hypocrisy” for his role as a defense attorney for the university.
Brittany Benefield, the plaintiff in what at the time was a high-profile suit, had been a student at UAB. She was recruited by the university as a child prodigy, which Bruce Feldman laid out in an article in the May 2002 issue of ESPN The Magazine.

Off topic - can someone give me a good ad block program?
I have had Ad Block Plus but it gives my computer fits so I uninstalled it. Each website needed refreshing - some of that has gone away now that I uninstalled the one I had but I still have trouble getting to most sites so I can read the articles!!! A FReeper some time ago recommended one but of course, I don’t recall it...unless it was Ad Block Plus..sorry! Getting to this one just now wasn’t TOO BAD but I know the problem will return..

He absolutely did - very deceitful, underhanded maneuver but of course being in IL, he got away with it and went on to the U. S. Senate! I’d pay good money to have some gal or gals come forward revealing his past - how does he manage to keep so much hidden for so long? Hey - I’d even settle for “guys” - I don’t care - just someone to give him and his wife some heartburn and grief! Wipe the smirks off their faces forever!
The bigger story that no one will touch is that Doug Jones allegedly slow walked a case as US Attorney involving Paul Bryant Jr., Bear Bryant’s son.
His lack of action supposedly meant that charges were never filed.

Both my kids are “EEPS” (what we used to call Early Entry Projects).....now called “Dual Enrollment”. I have warned them about the profs (and older students) that may take advantage. Also to be aware of belittling of their beliefs in the classroom at the prof’s pleasure. The rest I do on my knees....in prayer for their protection and wisdom.

It was an ugly episode for the school and its fledgling football program, which was implicated in the scandal. Benefield, originally identified in court documents as Jane Doe, had been hailed as the youngest student ever admitted to an Alabama university. She began attending the university soon after she turned 15.
UAB in 2001 hired Jones to defend a football coach and the university police chief against allegations they didn’t protect Benefield from older athletes who sexually exploited her and exposed her to drugs and alcohol. One campus officer was also alleged to have had sex with the student.
Benefield said she has been watching allegations unfold against Roy Moore and other high-profile men and is glad to see discussions happening about sexual assault. She describes herself as “fairly liberal” and said she’s registered as a Democrat.
Benefield said at the time of the lawsuit, the publicity around the case was almost as bad as the abuse itself. Lawyers, including Jones, often spoke to the press.
Wow, Jones protected athletes, over age 18 who drugged and repeatedly raped a 15 year old student....
