Military Shouldn't Be Empowered to Draft People's Daughters – or Their Sons

A Pentagon report composed earlier in 2017 and obtained by reporters at The Washington Times in October makes a chilling recommendation: The federal government should enhance its power to conscript American citizens in wartime, all in the name of social justice.

The Times’ Rowan Scarborough wrote that the “Report on the Purpose and Utility of Registration System for Military Selective Service” recommends expanding the Selective Service System (SSS), an independent federal government agency tasked with maintaining personal records for individuals subject to possible military conscription, to include women.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4771, requiring all American males aged 18 to 26 (born on or after Jan. 1, 1960) to register with the Selective Service. Authorizing SSS and facilitating a draft, should the government call for one, was necessary, Carter wrote, because of his “[deep concern] about the unwarranted and vicious invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union and occupation by them of this innocent and defenseless country, which is completely unwarranted.”

The Pentagon’s report says including women in the SSS system would promote social justice by “showing a commitment to gender equality throughout the armed services, and fostering a sense of public service that comes from requiring draft registration as a ritual of adulthood.”

If 18 year old BOYS have to register, then so should the girls!

The best chance to stop our foreign military follies is a Draft. Until everyone has some skin in the game, the 99% who don’t serve just don’t care.

Nailed it.

I stand by position that the US mil should be all volunteer; unless in time of war. Your example illustrates my position - in times of war cops and firefighters were drafted, which I did not know. But no in non-war times.

And I am not saying that all or any percentage of draftees were not qualified. But in any draftee situation some (whatever percentage) will definitely not be qualified, especially in terms of attitude.

Drafting people to prop up Islamic governments in the Middle East is bad, and should not be excused by conflating it with the ideal of defending family / home / country, which is good.

“The military is really the most important thing the fed gov does. It should only be staffed by those who want to be there and are qualified. No pervs, trans, mental cases, gang members, special rules for females, etc.”

I agree. The military should be taken very seriously. Up till now, I think it has been. The libs are trying to turn it into a joke.

And if people are there who don’t want to be, I don’t know how that can not have a negative effect on morale.

“There are absolutely people like me out there. Literal zero energy that can’t do basic.”

I know people with no medical disqualifiers who would be mentally and physically crushed by basic training. It is not for the faint of heart and I don’t believe people should be conscripted against their will.

I am absolutely grateful to everyone who volunteers. Some of those are in my family. Hats off to all of you.

I sometimes tell people I was a “draft dodger”. Those who know me laugh and say, “Come on, you were in the Navy weren’t you?” My response is, “Yeah, I joined the Navy to keep from being drafted into the Army.” That is just about the truth of it insofar as I am able to understand my own motivation. While going to electronics school I and three of my classmates were chewed out by a CPO for some minor infraction and he started asking us one at a time why we were in the Navy to begin with. The other guys all gave him some high minded spiel about how patriotic they were and he came to me last. I told him I joined the Navy to fulfill my military obligation, in other words to get it over with. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “At least you’re honest.”

No, but I read and try to learn, and appreciate others’ experiences; which vary all over the spectrum right on this thread, as you can see.

The problem you have as far as I can see is this. What do you mean by 'qualified'? Who determines your meaning of 'qualified'? What criteria are you using that makes one 'qualified'?

By “qualified” I mean generally speaking, wants to be in the military, likes the prospect of serving in the military, and has the physical, mental and emotional nature suited to be in the military. Of course there are many different types of work and positions, so a variety of people with different interests, abilities and so on can fit in.

Gang members, criminals, perverts of all kinds, feminazis, and those who don’t want to be there, should not be there. I read a headline the other day that the mil is thinking of taking those with a history of some mental illness. That is an example of “not qualified”!

exactly!

If Egypt massed a big Army on Israel’s border they would just lose it in hours.................with quiet US assistance.

Arguably, the DRAFT is a dinosaur.
