The lowest population density in the nation—don’t see the threat here. Other than Anchorage, the NORKs would be hard-pressed to hit a population center. Sensationalize much?

Honolulu would make a more likely target.

Isn’t there a missile warning system located at the Pacific Spaceport complex...If he hit that, it would clearly send a message...

Frankly,if he hits any US territory, he and potentially we have big problems.

It is not sensationalizing to be prepared for anything—it is wise~government has been saying lay up 3 days to 2 weeks supplies for years.

State of preparedness...

You know, I cat-sat for a neighbor who has 4 kids—junior high thru college living at home. Though I did not scour the house to do a prepardness assessment, I needed to go into the pantry (they have same house design as mine so I knew where to look) for more cat food or litter...Pretty much empty shelves...Marie Kondo would be so proud. Nothing in fridge though they were out of town for a week, so not surprising.

However, unless they have huge stash in the garage or basement or upstairs, I wondered what they would do in the case of an emergency...

From what I have read, during normal conditions, stores only have 3 day supplies...can you imagine what would happen to that family in the event of an emergency?

We had a power outage that lasted for a few hours into the evening, and I offered some emergency candles to another neighbor as they did not have an batteries for their flashlights...

I truly worry about what would happen in the event of an emergency in my neighborhood.

If NK hits Alaska, it would have more to do with all MD installations there.

Preparing for nuclear disasters is not stupid. NK missiles can be shot down and its warheads may be broken up releasing radioactive materials.

The power in our region went out after an ice storm. Our block was out for 6 days. We took an old neighbor lady in as we have a wood burning stove to keep warm and cook with, invertors to batteries for electric lights, etc. I had to go to another neighborhood to go to the store once. Bought a bag of marshallows for S’mores.

I could have bought more stuff - but I sort of wanted to prove a point to myself that I had everything our family needed. Although I was kicking myself for only having stale marshmallows!

I would think that most of the folks in Alaska are pretty well stocked up. Although I suppose in the cities they can get complacent.

I would think earthquakes and bad weather are more of a threat than Mr. Kim though.

Freedom56v2 :"..It is not sensationalizing to be prepared for anything—it is wise

My grandparents kept a pantry with numerous shelves which had loads of canned goods, both commercial and hand canned goods.
Most of our ancestors were independent minded, and did not rely on the government for their daily sustenance, even in the times of trouble or disaster.
Times have changed: pantries aren't even included adjoining modern kitchens; storm shelters in middle America, once included food storage and supplies - not anymore.
Many Americans don't even know how to can foods, or ferment foods, and recently, many are just learning how to smoke meats, fish, and cheeses.
Many Americans have lost that independent spirit, and just await some type of government program or intervention to provide their needs :
However, we have learned too late that government action takes a week to activate, and another week to see any improvement - better to rely on your neighbors (mutual assistance)
or other family members, who will be quicker to respond than the government.

There are over 100,000 people in the Fairbanks region. Just a couple of us. But I haven’t heard back about this.

I, too, am concerned for this family
and also concerned for your safety should this family be unable to care for themselves.
Even a #50 bag of rice, placed in two 5 gallon buckets with lids(available at Lowes, or Home Depot)
would provide for their basic food needs for several weeks.
At least it would provide them with a start for 'Food Storage', and be a learning opportunity for them.
Grains, wheat berries, legumes (beans) and dried sweet corn are inexpensive, and provide many cooking possibilities whereas freeze-dried meats remain very pricey.
Many Hispanic families subsist economically on beans and rice; it may not be pretty, but it beats famine.

This is somewhat true. In the 60s, our eighth grade teacher taught civil defense classes, and he spent a week teaching his students about it.

Hubby also taught civil defense. Any shelter is better than no shelter, but you can make an improvised fallout shelter even just using stuff you have on hand-beyond just covering windows and doors.

In one example I remember a makeshift shelter in a basement corner, They stacked all sorts of stuff on top of a table. The filled the drawers of several chests and put them against the table, leaving an opening to enter. They closed the opening after entering by stacking up concrete blocks. Sat on cushions on the floor, I guess.

If you live at least 25 miles away from the epicenter, chances are decent for survival. It is advised to stay in your shelter for at least two weeks. Then, you can go out for limited periods to restock, take out the porta potty, etc. Make sure to change clothes before going back into shelter, or wear a disposable cover before going out.

Potassium Iodide Tablets should be right up towards the top of your list. Canned foods will still be good-you just have to clean them off, before opening. Even a banana is good-clean it off before peeling. If space is limited, stock the shelter with enough food, water, and potty provisions for 2 weeks, and plan on restocking from your pantry/storage area.

I think it’s criminal, that the Government has spent lots of taxpayer money for their own shelters, but basically just quit doing anything for citizens.

Several pamphlets shown here with pics of various ways to set up shelters.

This one looks like they used sandbags.

Its really big, more than twice the size of Texas.

Yep, and it has, IIRC, all three layers of the Missile Defense system.

Some people always tend to dismiss something like this as bureaucracy run amok or deep state propaganda to have total control of population.

From the article there’s nothing that 50% of Alaskans aren’t used to and doing already. Emergency supplies, water sources, long harsh winters, support network, power outages, limited game and food deliveries, bears, canning, preserving and distilling skills, etc. Alaskans are survivors.

“I think it is good to be prepared with water, food and medical supplies to shelter in place regardless—esp. in Alaska.”

When I lived there, many of the people are prepared with emergency stashes of everything, anyhow. If you live even a little bit remote, which is just about everywhere, even if just a couple miles out of town, it could br critical during weather issues.

Also, a lot of people learned to do this after the ‘64 earthquake when they had no drinking water, and couldn’t buy food, for days. My aunt would fill used Clorox bottles with water and stash them, then re-fill them with fresh every month.

“Mining for Gold” - Cowboy Junkies (GREAT accapella song & album!!!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apXNxd1ZgC0&list=PLm9smEh4bd5j37JMjQYZNMcvUbuBOrVWv

We are miners,
Hard rock miners,
To the shaft house we must go,
Our bottles on our shoulders,
We are marching to the slope.

On the line boys,
On the line boys,
Drill your holes and stand in line,
Till the shift boss comes to tell you,
You must drill her out on top

Can’t you feel the rock dust in your lungs,
It will cut down a miner when he is still young,
Two years and the silicosis takes hold,

And I feel like I’m dying,
From mining for gold
Yes, I feel like I’m dying,
From mining for gold.

I occasionally watch some of the Alaska-based reality shows about people living out in the bush, and there seem to be a non-trivial percentage that are absolutely dependent on gasoline brought in from the outside to run their generators.
