A couple who say they were handcuffed for hours in a police patrol car after their hibiscus plants were confused for marijuana are suing the police and an insurance company.

Edward and Audrey Cramer say in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that a Nationwide Insurance Co. agent investigating a fallen tree at their Buffalo Township home sent photos of their flowering plant to police. The lawsuit alleges that Buffalo Township police officers with assault rifles went to their home on Oct. 7 to investigate.

Audrey Cramer, 66, said she was partially dressed when she went to the door and police would not let her put on pants before she was handcuffed.

I don't think I would ever mistake hibiscus for marijuana, and I am neither a botanist nor a pothead. The jagged leaves and color of marijuana leaves are very distinctive.

The flowers can be a variety of colors--red, white, pink, lavender. But, the pictures which brought the police were of leaves only... all green. But even so, the plant doesn't look anything like MJ.

The Cramer’s should own the town of Sardis when all is said and done. Went through a situation 30 years ago when I walked out of a 7/11 convenience store and had a cop in my vehicle looking for evidence of a recently committed crime. He just took it upon himself to search every red pickup because that was the vehicle they were looking for. Needless to say the next day he was unemployed.

They should own the town and the insurance company. I’m not big on law suits but put me on the jury and I’ll make an exception in this case.

I’ve been there, at least as far as the car goes.

Many years ago, I came out of a store, and got into my car. A police car immediately raced to block me in. A police officer approached me, and asked about where I had been recently, did I loan my car to anybody, and suchlike.

After calling in, the officer explained that a car matching the description of mine, with the plates removed, was involved in a bank robbery nearby less than an hour previously.

Fortunately, I did not match the description of the suspect, being an average height white man wearing glasses.

Too many cops are becoming like journalists. They have no idea what the word ‘investigate’ means.

Considering this occurred in Maryland, the irony will not be lost should the offending plant prove to be a Lord Baltimore hibiscus.

Police are just armed crime scene reporters.

Thats why you need to have your own guns. When trouble strikes, they are only 30 minutes away.

investigating a fallen tree at their Buffalo Township

I give this a 7 on the honking hoot scale. This must be where boss hog lives. The fallen tree caper turned into the big Hibiscus caper. A real knee slapper!

When they initiate contact with SWAT they are doing more than reporting on a crime scene. A minimum effort to investigate the facts, such as identifying the alleged offending plant or getting the address correct, should be in order.

At least so-called journalists don’t carry guns. Although they are capable of getting people killed through their incompetence.
