The gunman who killed at least 26 people in a church south of San Antonio was kicked out of the Air Force after cutting a plea deal in which he admitted to fracturing his stepson’s skull, the former head of Air Force prosecutors said Monday.

Devin Patrick Kelley faced at least five years in a military prison for attacking the baby and also his wife, the former top Air Force prosecutor, retired Col. Don Christensen, said.

An Air Force jury handed him a 12-month sentence in 2012, he said.

“He entered pleas of guilty to fracturing his son’s skull, his stepson’s skull, and to assaulting his wife. And as a result of that there really is no question about his guilt,” Christensen said. “He should not have been able to get a gun (after Kelly’s discharge from the service.) There is no way this man should have legally owned a gun based upon what he was convicted of.”

This was with his first wife. She divorced him. And he found another fool to abuse. Police were called out a few years back regarding domestic abuse with his new girlfriend, who later married him. And had a child with him.

I suspect his poor second wife was being helped and supported by her Christian mother, who attended the church. Being a hate-filled atheist, this would not site well. Just my thoughts.

I also read that he specifically targeted that church because the church banned guns. Can’t confirm that though.

I read where he sent threatening texts to his Mother in law who attended that church. But who was not at services yesterday.

I suspect the mother in law was rightfully upset at her daughter marrying a convicted child/spouse abuser and he took it out at her church.

First off, How did this murderer pass a background check? With a domestic violence assault conviction he should have automatically been declined through a NCIC database check. Apparently he was denied a concealed carry license, so who screwed up? Was it the store that sold him the AR or did someone higher up the LE food chain pass his background check for nefarious purposes?

I have a difficult time restricting guns from anyone (old enough to drive) in free society. If a person is a clear and present danger to themselves or others they should not be walking around free. Lock them up or turn them off.

Government either needs to enforce the firearms laws on the books or let *everyone* have firearms for protection. Currently the system is set up to ensure the wrong people are armed and the salt of the earth are helpless.
