Rand Paul recovering from 5 broken ribs after attack at Kentucky home

Rand Paul was recovering Sunday from five broken ribs, including three displaced fractures, after he was assaulted by a neighbor who tackled him from behind at the senator’s Kentucky home, officials said.

Senior Adviser Doug Stafford said it is unclear when the Republican senator will return to work since he is in “considerable pain” and has difficulty getting around, including flying. Stafford said this type of injury is marked by severe pain that can last for weeks to months.

“This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force,” Stafford said a statement to Fox News.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported that an arrest warrant said Paul told police his neighbor came on his property and tackled him from behind Friday, forcing him to the ground, all while the senator had been mowing his lawn. He had trouble breathing because of the rib injury, the warrant said.

A Warren County official did not immediately respond to a request from The Associated Press for a copy of the arrest warrant.

Police arrested 59-year-old Rene Boucher on Saturday and charged him with misdemeanor fourth-degree assault with a minor injury. Boucher lives next door to Paul and his wife, according to Warren County property records.

Boucher was released from jail Saturday on a $7,500 bond. He has a court date scheduled for Thursday. Boucher did not return a phone call from The Associated Press seeking comment. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

Takes along time for bone to heal with a lot of pain along the way. Every use of the upper body producing that pain, including breathing.

How is that 4th degree assault? I broke 3 ribs flying off a horse, one rib breaking in half and going through a lung.

Believe me, there is nothing about breaking 5 ribs that is anything but first degree assault.

So, anyone can nearly beat a senator to death and walk on less than 10 grand in bail?

Rand could have easily died of a punctured lung.

I say it’s attempted murder by a crazed leftist.

Isn’t it a Federal Offense to attack a member of Congress?

Paul should sue his azz.

Charged him with a misdemeanor? Should have charged him with felony assault and had the state pull his medical licence immediately.

That’s quite an assault. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Seems strange. The difference in Kentucky between second degree assault (a felony) and fourth degree assault (a misdemeanor) is whether the perp intentionally caused “serious physical injury” as opposed to simply “physical injury.” “Serious physical injury” includes an injury causing “prolonged impairment of health, or prolonged loss or impairment to the function of any bodily organ.” I would have to think five broken ribs, including several displaced fractures, would meet that definition.

Hopefully they will upgrade those charges.

The injuries seem kind of serious, and they only charged him with a misdemeanor, plus him being a member of the medical profession. They should have made an example of him

That is now considered "...misdemeanor fourth-degree assault with a minor injury."?

Seriously?

I’m speculating that the “assault” itself may not have been as serious as the injuries make it sound ... and the injuries were exacerbated by Sen. Paul falling on his lawn tractor (or vice versa).

The degree of assault is driven by the wording of the applicable law, not any common sense.

Secondly, the injuries now known are much worse than originally reported. Displaced rib fractures can penetrate a lung and the resultant bleed can be very life threatening.

Hope you are all healed.

This really is a civil war of liberals against conservatives where the conservatives are sheep and the liberals are wolves.

I’m not sure if Senator Paul participated in the reps baseball practice. I thought that was between the house members. I could be wrong.

That wasn’t a misdemeanor. It was a lot more than that, and I hope Senator Paul goes after him.
