Facebook estimates 200 million users may be fake: report

By Josh Delk - 11/04/17 10:50 AM EDT

acebook now estimates that nearly 200 million of its users may be fake accounts.

Facebook, Twitter, and Google testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a three-day session this week, providing investigators information on the efforts of foreign actors to meddle in U.S. politics.

One of the investigators' concerns, according to the New York Times, is the widespread use of "fake" social media accounts.

Twitter also reports that nearly 5 percent of its user base, or more than 16 million people, are fake "spam" accounts, Sean Edgett, the social media giant's general counsel, said in testimony.

Some of those “fake” accounts may be duplicate or false accounts. Facebook has consistently struggled to police such accounts - which include accounts for pets or accounts using a fake name - in an attempt to verify users.

The tech company testimonies come amidst a wide-ranging investigation into foreign meddling in the 2016 election, and Moscow-based propaganda aimed at influencing its outcome.

The general counsel for Facebook told committee members that the company was doubling its in-house staff focused on reviewing accounts along and would use artificial intelligence to find more fraudulent accounts.

One good reason to avoid arguing with leftist idiots on the news sites there.

People with accounts under fake names see those ads, too. What's the problem?

I know for a fact some of them are aliases. In fact I would venture that most of them are probably alias accounts.

I only have fake accounts on Fukbook.

I don’t care to tell the world where I’m going on vacation or my dog’s favorite food, and I won’t be a commodity for Zuckerberg to sell.

I know several people who have several facebook accounts under different names, so I’ve always been skeptical of their claims regarding the number of people on facebook.

You mean the thousands of “Users” with different names all spouting the same: “I made $8,000 last month working at home part-time” are fake?

Darn, I knew it was too good to be true.

If I'm a goobermint agent on a social site trying to start trouble, am I really a "fake" ?

THAT'S the question we need to hard wire a definition to.

I always interpreted "fake" as "lie" or mis direction.

If we accept "fake" as including a real account but the person hitting the keys is not in a conversation or argument for the purity of discerning truth but to roil the mud .... we're gonn'a lose the whole impact of "fake" ..

imo

THOSE accounts are provocateurs, not fakes.

I’m trying to think of someone who doesn’t have a second facebook account among my family. I can’t think of a single one. Facebook is grossly underestimating that number, and it is by their own hand that so many were created, mostly by Facebook based games that required certain actions by a number of Facebook friends. People would be one short and the obvious solution is to just create another account.

Those hearings were mesmerizing. They accepted political ads without any notice about whom was paying for them. They accepted political ads paid for with foreign currency, including rubles. The message does seem to be that they assumed the rules didn’t apply to FB, Twitter, and Google.

Not quite, I have a fake FaceBook account that I use to post on forms that are based on FB. It preserves anonymity.

Oh, yeah. I paid for some advertising to a FB page. I got a bunch of likes, but they were almosts all strange, generic names with almost nothing on their pages (when I went to check a bunch of them). There was nothing to indicate those fake personalities had a real life.

I think those fake people's "like" leavings were largely computer-generated by Facebook. FB was happy to collect my advertising dollars. I believe I was being scammed by FB itself, as it was with FB that I contracted.

The message does seem to be that they assumed the rules didn’t apply to FB, Twitter, and Google.

They didn't. They were rules imposed upon broadcasters as part of their license; internet websites don't operate under federal licensing and had only the obligations required of any business to keep track of payments - that of recording the amount paid.
