NewsBusters Post Critic Tries to Shame Country Music Into Boarding Gun-Control Bandwagon

Washington Post music writer Emily Yahr was tapping her foot on Thursday...waiting for the country music industry to abandon its entertainment mission and end its shameful silence on gun control, after dozens of country music fans were murdered by shooter Stephen Paddock in Las Vegas: “Country music avoided politics this year. Then Las Vegas happened. Will anything change?”

The mood of the annual event, which the network declared “a night of hope and healing” instead of the usual lighthearted trophy ceremony, was compassionate and somber -- and, unlike nearly every other award show in 2017, completely devoid of politics.

In a year when it felt like everything in pop culture became a political flash point -- TV sitcoms, the NFL, the Golden Globe Awards -- country music managed to not say much of anything at all. This surprised no one familiar with the Nashville industry’s whispered advice about political beliefs: Avoid making them public.

But after the Las Vegas massacre, the format was suddenly linked with the contentious gun control debate. On Wednesday, millions will tune into the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards, the genre’s biggest night in the national spotlight. Can country music singers still get away with not voicing an opinion?

Who’s to blame for the silence? The liberal media’s Public Enemy #1 came into the crosshairs: The NRA.

Guess the fence post turtle reporter is unaware that there are a lot of dem supporters in the C&W ranks. Maybe they're smart enough to 'NOT' PO their fans.

Emily Yahr thinks she can shame an industry into political dialogue. Arrogance. Control-freak liberals lack shame.

Maybe because other country stars looked around and wondered why they never see the Dixie Chicks at the awards ceremonies any more. Then they remembered how one of the Chicks couldn’t shut her yap about stuff that had nothing to do with their music or concert tours. The smart C&W musicians learned and went on playing music, entertaining fans, making record deals and counting their money.

She’s barking up the wrong tree going after guns, perhaps it would be best to go after those who are avoiding the numerous questions hanging unanswered. No matter what the media tells us, the entire story about a lone shooter stinks to high heaven. IMO there are numerous reasons to doubt what we have been “fed” by not only the media but those who supposedly “investigated” the crime. Amazing how so many eye witnesses who have claimed there being more than one shooter, suddenly wind up dying mysteriously. “Wonders” never cease.

Emily Yahr got her opinion published with her name at the top of the article. Country western fans gave her the finger. She doesn’t care what they think, she got what she really wanted - her name at the top of a published article.

Thanks for the King of the Cowboys flashback to the 70s with the NRA ad. Classy Christian gentleman and unabashed gun lover!

So the CMA didn’t watch and learn from the Dixie Chick debacle and has allowed the media to set traps for their members. If I were a CMA member, I’d be pissed that I paid a $ignificant $um to be hung out to dry by my industry association. I guess we’ll get to see just how many musicians have a brain in their head in their media dealings on the red carpet.

Yes, but his burgers and chicken were mediocre. I got to eat at one of his few remaining restaurants last year in Front Royal, VA. The Double-R Bar Burger ain't what it used to be.

I worked at a Roy Roger's Roast Beef restaurant for 6 months or so when I was in college in Arizona.

As a broke college kid, I thought a free sandwich, fries and a soda on every work shift was a big bonus.

I couldn't tell you about the quality but the food tasted pretty good to me.

The media’s view of itself is insane. They call a circle jerk event where a pack of egoists hand out awards to each other a “night of hope and healing”? Disgusting. Who is it going to heal? How many fatherless and motherless children is it going to comfort or put food on the table for? Sick narcissists. Talk talk talk look at me look at me look at me. Awards shows are degraded and a pox.

Next stop.... country acts contrived by suits in LA... singin and dancin to canned music...

Bluegrass, Old Timey, Texas Swing, Honky Tonk, and Diesel-Billy are still the best IMHO.

Country music ain’t country anymore! Gone corporate a couple of decades ago.
