We spend more to jail our kids than to educate them. It’s time we stop
NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION ^ | October 24, 2017 | President, NEA. Lily Eskelsen García

Posted on 10/24/2017 5:02:30 PM PDT by mdittmar

In 2015 we voted unanimously at the NEA Representative Assembly to confront institutional racism in our schools. That means looking at the structures and processes that advantage some students and disadvantage others, especially students of color.

Those structures and processes include the harsh disciplinary practices that directly or indirectly push students out of school and into the criminal justice system. We call this the school to prison pipeline.

We’re standing together to shut down the pipeline and bring an end to the unfair imposition of discipline that alienates far too many students from their own schools. NEA is building awareness, educating members and the community and taking action with NEA affiliates, members and allies.

That’s ironic, as most of the people in jail are illiterate.

Well Lily Garcia, perhaps if you disband the NEA good things in education will return to our public schools.

The NEA is about money, not the kids.

We should stop spending so much on jails and make them places that people don’t want to return to.

Poor Lily (all that education I’m assuming), can’t figure out why “good kids” go to jail and prison.

Yes, it’s society’s fault there are far too many single and even zero parent homes.

It’s our fault they sell drugs, rape, and kill each other. it’s our fault they commit armed robberies. It’s our fault they burglarize other people’s homes. It’s our fault they car-jack. It’s our fault they riot, steal, and destroy property.

Why we just put them away because we’re mean racists. /s

What a fruit-loop.

I saw some round table discussion about this once. I don’t remember any names, but one older black man on the panel, said he got a better education in the Jim Crow south, than the kids in inner cities get today.

And he suggested that values and discipline we’re what is lacking in schools today, not a lack of money.

Kids don’t wind up in gangs, getting shot, or going to jail because their schools didn’t have enough funding. That’s an utter joke. They wind up in those situations because the fabric of society has frayed, including the sanctity of family and the sanctity of life. Children need to be loved and nurtured from the time they are infants, and to feel security, warmth, and safety in their family environment as they grow. Lacking that, they become vulnerable to all the rest. Government money to schools will not address or fix this.

Classic non-sequitur. The conclusion does not follow from the premise.

A slight variation of “Its for the Children!!!!”. argument.

This is claptrap. If kids do bad things they deserve their time behind the bars. Tired of this “unfair treatment.” If they saw the behaviors on the other side they’d change their views very quickly and start building better walls.

Throwing money at “education” is not the answer. Bringing back REAL education is a good place to start. Of course, the biggest factor is the home, and unless there is a real revival in America VERY soon, there’s not much hope there. I’m talking about a revival of historic proportions. Anything less will not change things fast enough to catch up with the decadence of our society. Father, I pray, in the Name of Jesus, for such a revival.
