Musk and his companies' investors enjoy most of the financial upside of the government support, while taxpayers shoulder the cost.
The payoff for the public would come in the form of major pollution reductions, but only if solar panels and electric cars break through as viable mass-market products. For now, both remain niche products for mostly well-heeled customers.
Musk declined repeated requests for an interview through Tesla spokespeople, and officials at all three companies declined to comment.
The subsidies have generally been disclosed in public records and company filings. But the full scope of the public assistance hasn't been tallied because it has been granted over time from different levels of government.
New York state is spending $750 million to build a solar panel factory in Buffalo for SolarCity. The San Mateo, Calif.-based company will lease the plant for $1 a year. It will not pay property taxes for a decade, which would otherwise total an estimated $260 million.
The federal government also provides grants or tax credits to cover 30% of the cost of solar installations. SolarCity reported receiving $497.5 million in direct grants from the Treasury Department.
That figure, however, doesn't capture the full value of the government's support.
Nevada has agreed to provide Tesla with $1.3 billion in incentives to help build a massive battery factory near Reno.

You, OTOH, have done nothing but bitch. Just another of the Musk-haters who infest FR. Buzz off.
It cost a lot to keep government and NASA secrets.
Have you taken you meds today. Sheesh! Lighten-up before you become like the Vegas shooter(s). “a-hole...sh*t for brains”. Really??? Some day someone moight have a “talk” with you. You are an embarrassment to FR. Please don’t respond to me any more because you are mentally ill.
.
Are all of your arguments as weak as the garbage you’ve posted on this thread?
.
I’m still waiting to hear why only a liberal would buy electric car. And I’m still waiting to hear how Elon Musk really hasnt accomplished that much.
I live in the middle of Ohio. There is a very low likelihood I will have to evacuate to anywhere. I can afford a Tesla, and based on driving one and reading the reviews and the experiences of other customers, it’s a fantastic vehicle. It has the limitations any electric car would regarding range, but given my driving habits, those are not important to me. So tell me again why I would have to be a liberal to even consider buying one.
.
You can wait till hell freezes for anyone to be foolish enough to engage your false narratives.
Only a fool would buy an electric car, unless they have other more appropriate vehicles to use in an emergency.
That you are a fool is adequately demonstrated here in this thread.
.
You bring zero to this discussion other than gratuitous name calling. I’ll wait until you have something substantive to say, but I won’t hold my breath.
.
The rest of us are holding our noses until you hold your breath.
.
Your argument about not be able to evacuate is particularly absurd. Some of us actually have more than one car.
.
So you admit that an electric coffin is inappropriate for evacuation!
(but its still a nice touch to bury you in one)
.
When I buy a car, I don’t consider evacuation. In 50+ years I’ve never had to, and in the area I live no one has ever had to. So for me, that reason is akin to someone living in Miami rejecting a car model because the heater wasn’t very strong.
.
I have no idea where you live, but I do know for sure that at some point in the next 3 or 4 years you will most assuredly have to evacuate, and if you’re unlucky enough to be in your electric coffin, there is a strong chance that it will cost you your life.
.
Really? Evacuate from what? There aren’t hurricanes in the Midwest. I’m nowhere near a body of water. You don’t evacuate during a tornado watch. Please enlighten me. What is this pending threat that will require an unprecedented evacuation? You’re sounding more and more paranoid and delusional.
