They were previously allowed to use mere driving licenses. But residents of some US states may soon require additional ID, such as passports, if they wish to embark on air travel - even if just domestically. That's the new procedure on the horizon for people from states that have not yet introduced the standards required by the 2005 Real ID Act, which demands stricter regulations for state-issued IDs. The states that haven't yet fallen into line each now have a grace period of three months to meet the revised criteria. This deadline expires on 22 January 2018.

Isn’t this racist?
It costs alot to get a Passport. This makes it patently burdensome to travel by air in the USA. This is racist and suppression of air travel.(sarc) How long before traveling by vehicle requires a passport?
Interesting??? How ‘bout ‘criminal’.
As usual, because GOVT can’t\won’t do one+ of its infinitesimally small number of authorized\mandatory functions, the Rights of the People are suppressed, trampled, ignored and abused.
are you kidding ? I watch Mex types come in ou=n direct flights , FROM CANADA , all the time without showing any ID whatsoever . And if they have any it’s probably fake . Nobody’s checkin! TSA ? ha! local airport police ? ha! zip , zero , nada . Come on in
The lack of a national ID card is a real security problem in the US. Many of us don’t like the very concept. However, we have a nation full of 50 millions illegals and native born professional criminals, and we have no way to track them.
Is New York still on the list? If New York is still on the list they’ll push the deadline again. Really it’s pathetic so many places still can’t get their IDs to match some pretty simple regs 12 years later. Government, capable of screwing up anything.
Maddening how long this was delayed.
I just hope this doesn’t bring calls for a National ID other than a passport.
A passport SHOULD be required from persons of some sanctuary city/states since they serve up blatant risks to the rest of us. Watch it be rescinded by losers in Congress.
I’d have to get one if I didn’t already have one...

My state (Pennsylvania) is on the lust.
Did folks see that spot for obtaining an implant?
Why breeze right through airports with one of those.
And with readers across the nation, they’ll know your precise location any time they want to.
“Yes sir. Well, he’s coming out of the bathroom in a McDonalds in Southern Idaho right now.”
The Real ID Act was passed 12 YEARS ago.
In all the articles a out RealID I have never seen what the failing states are doing wrong or refusing to do. Is the ID insufficient or is the state failing to verify that the person matches the ID when they give it.
I think it costs about $120 or so for a passport now. Another way for govt to pick the wallets of the citizens. State governments are just as bad.
This is now happening because so many states are issuing drivers licenses to illegals. Yet another unintended consequence by government.
We would not need these stricture ID requirements if all states had refused to give out licenses to non-citizens.
The Graphic at the website shows most of ‘flyover country’ as ‘Compliant’, the rest as ‘Under Review’ except for Virginia which is ‘Extension’.
No States are shown as ‘Not Compliant’.
What about States which in the past have openly issued drivers licenses to Illegals?
If someone can't afford the $55 fee for a Passport Card (plus the costs of the pictures - another $10 - $15) they probably aren't going to be able to afford many domestic airline tickets, either.
That's good for 10 years, then $30 to renew.
I think US Customs, INS, etc. is run in Canada prior to boarding the plane.
You don’t need the book for domestic travel. Just the $55 card.
