Who are the two police who first engaged the shooter? It was an incredibly brave move to engage a shooter with an automatic weapon, using only pistols, if that is what actually happened.
Apparently, approximately ten minutes into the heinous crime, a hotel security person and a policeman engaged the shooter and one of them was shot through the door. They probably had only hand guns and were seriously outgunned. It was approximately another hour before SWAT team members were able to set a charge and breach the door, finding the shooter had taken his life.
This early contact with the criminal ensured he could not fire another couple of thousand rounds into the mass of people still in harm's way. To my knowledge, the shooting stopped after the two heroes tried to enter the shooter's room. The shooter was distracted. He would have had to turn his back to the door to fire into the crowd to continue his mayhem.
Who are these two heroes? How is the one who was shot?
This is not to take anything at all away from the first responders, medical personnel, good Samaritans other police etc. who are also heroes.

After listening to the police radio traffic, I am not convinced that these two officers actually engaged Paddock in a gunfight, but rather their presence changed his targeting priorities.
And ultimately caused him to eat that Taurus Judge he brought with him.
If this is true as it is related here, I would suspect two people approaching the door, probably convinced the shooter it was only seconds before many more would be charging the door.
I don’t believe he was still firing after 15 minutes, if that long.

I, and others, have been puzzled by the time it took to enter the room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Room 135 was where the mass killer set up to attack the Route 91 Harvest Country Music attendees.
The first calls to 911 happened at 10:08 p.m. local time. The police blasted down the door to Room 135 on the 32nd floor about 72 minutes later.
But what happened in between those times? At what time did the mass murderer stop shooting at people below? Those times are becoming clear. From cbslocal.com:
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Gunfire rang out last night just two floors below Chris Bethel’s Mandalay Bay Hotel room. “I could just hear the gun shots. Continuously. Just full automatic,” said Bethel. “There’s explosions going off. It was like, a bomb just went off man. And then there were more gun shots.”
The above statement does not tell us when the mass murderer stopped firing at the people below. We know that he fired for about 10 minutes at the people attending the Route 91 Harvest festival. That festival was 500 yards from his shooting position in the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. He used bumpfire type stocks on two separate rifles to simulate automatic weapons fire. He was firing from two prepared positions. The use of two positions fits well with the pauses between bursts of fire. The first pause was 37 seconds.
An officer on the ground report gunfire as late as 10:21. Those last shots could have been the shooting of the hotel security man outside of the mass killer’s door. From newsweek.com

Look at the link a FRer posted on this thread. The shooter was engaged after 13 minutes.
The automatic weapon the gunman was firing would probably shoot right through the hotel walls. It went through the door.
Please get the facts before you embarrass yourself with such bloviation.

Yes, and if the plan was to take himself out to avoid prison and humiliation, it could be thwarted by police entering the room.
