After listening to the police radio traffic, I am not convinced that these two officers actually engaged Paddock in a gunfight, but rather their presence changed his targeting priorities.
And ultimately caused him to eat that Taurus Judge he brought with him.
If this is true as it is related here, I would suspect two people approaching the door, probably convinced the shooter it was only seconds before many more would be charging the door.
My question really was wtf was Mandalay security doing other than checking the card counters on their blackjack tables?

If you’ve ever been in a monster hotel/casino, you’ll know how long those corridors are and how isolated the first guard/cop to approach that door must have felt.
I stayed at the Four Season section of this building (rooms above 36th, I think), and the corridors are so long and downright confusing, actually, b/c of the X layout of the building’s interior.
I’ve been trying to imagine had I been there in the hotel what reaction/recognition I would have had, and I can only think none. A friend who was there slept through the entire event, and only woke up when security cleared the building. Her phone was full of 100s of texts from worried friends and family.
These heroes who first approached the shooter’s room are amazing and, as you say, may well have saved hundreds of lives.
