A 19-year-old man who spent 60 hours locked alone inside a gated southern Indiana cave says he feels lucky to be alive. Indiana University freshman Lukas Cavar was on a spelunking trip to Sullivan Cave when he became separated Sunday afternoon from 12 other members of the university's Caving Club. Cavar is an enthusiast of spelunking, the exploration of caves as a hobby. When he eventually reached the cave entrance, Cavar found club members had padlocked its gate, unaware that he remained inside.

In Ireland, there are news editors reporting this story in limerick form...

Lived once a boy names Lucas, whose linguistic skills did spook us, but when locked underground, his tongue went around and around....til he was finally found safe and sound!

“...he became separated...from 12 other members...” There’s the problem (wink wink). He was number 13!

I’m surprised experienced cave explorers missed him. It’s always a good idea to take a roll call before and after.

Once happened to me at the Coliseum in Rome. The workers didn’t do a thorough check at lunchtime and went off, padlocking the gates. Just me at the cats...

Go in with 13, come out with 12.

You would think someone would realize there was a problem.

There are speleologist and “urban explorer” websites, people who explore NYC subway stations that were shut down decades ago as well as abandoned mental institutions, prisons, ghost towns such as Centralia, PA, etc. It’s interesting, but dangerous and in most cases constitute trespassing.

“unaware that he remained inside”

Not a very good and tight group if 12 went in and the 11 who came out did not know where the 12th member was and just assumed he was out.

According to the article, his cell phone didn’t work in the cave.

Scary. Good that the parents filed the missing persons report immediately.

My youngest daughter would go spelunking with friends while attending UCSC (Santa Cruz). We didn't know for a while, until she showed us some pictures. Lots of caves in the Santa Cruz mountains. They would squeeze through narrow openings to get to lower tunnels, and if not with others could get lost inside. Scared us that she was doing this, because if missing we would have no idea where she was. 19-year-olds do crazy things. She's older with her own daughter now and it's her turn to worry as a parent.

They often document their exploration with photographs and put them up on web sites dedicated to such activities.

I have to admit I don find many of them interesting!

.
The vast network of underground chambers and tunnels at Fort Warden in the northeast corner of the Olympic peninsula is an interesting place to explore.

There is a common sense mine safety process, where each miner puts an ID card in a rack at the start of the shift BEFORE going underground. At the end of the shift, the supervisor scans the rack to see if there are any cards still in a slot. If yes and there is no ‘oops’, then the emergency crew goes into action. This amateur club needs a bit of that common sense and should be suspended from any further ‘adventures’ until they are better trained!
