Judge to wiseguy: You should’ve thought before joining the mob

A no-nonsense Manhattan federal court judge blasted an aged wiseguy Thursday before sentencing him to seven years in prison — saying he should have thought beforehand about joining the mob if he didn’t want to die behind bars.

“There’s a long history of capos who have died in prison,” Judge Richard Sullivan coldly told 73-year-old Pasquale “Patsy” Parrello before handing down the sentence — which brought audible gasps of disbelief from the packed courtroom.

“You must have understood this, you had 88 months to think about it before,” he added.

It isn’t even about the mob per se. It’s about gross wickedness. Violent shakedowns and trying to appear the nice guy in society.

I’ve been tracking a lot of mobsters related to the Harry rReid bribe schemes. They aren’t lovable, they are the scum of the earth.

Only 7 years in prison? Most wise guys can do 7 years standing on their heads. Even at 73 years old, it’s not enough.

It’s like the mob makes them quite two faced — because it is. This is one of the devil’s love traps. To a guy floundering in a mishap of life, it is not hard for the mob to approach him and win him. Oh you can have your evil and your religion too. Seems to me this (the point of recruitment) is where it should be cut off.

The judge also scorned claims made by defense attorney Mark DeMarco regarding his client’s intense Roman Catholicism and his faith. “I don’t think Roman Catholicism takes a favorable view toward extortion,” Sullivan said, interrupting the attorney.

One of the most sickening things about the mob, and this was brought out in the widely scorned Godfather 3 movie that I loved totally, is the weakness of parish priests to the bribes in the form of big donations from the wiseguys. Then they are all buddy buddy, and the parish thinks they are great padrones.

I personally witnessed a funeral for a lethal mobster that was blocks long, cars and cars of flowers and mourners; whereas a few months later, one of the most distinguished and generous straight up patrons and great Italian-Americans—who had paid for a city park, helped hundreds of families, subsidized several city insitutions out of proceeds of his legitimate businesses like his father before him—had a funeral in the same parish attended by a couple of dozen people, and only one flower car. It made me sick.

“I personally witnessed a funeral for a lethal mobster that was blocks long, cars and cars of flowers and mourners———”

Sounds like Ray Patriaca’s funeral in R.I.——massive.

“This is one of the devil’s love traps.”

One guy I track is Oscar Goodman, lawyer to the mob and former Vegas mayor. There is a long documentary about his former clients, he invariably says they were nice guys. They must have killed 50 among them, sometimes with an icepick in the ear.

I understand your point. I agree; it’s sickening. It’s the same thing for sports “heroes” and celebrities compared to combat veterans and just plain decent and upstanding citizens - parents who do a good job raising their kids, people with “unimportant” jobs, people who volunteer to do the non-glorious heavy lifting needed to help others. But I don’t think God counts the number of cars in our funeral processions.

Certainly not. My concern is what kind of message it sends to impressionable kids.
