Gingrich or Santorum as speaker? House conservatives plot mischief for the fall
Washington Post ^ | 09/07/2017 | Robert Costa and Ashley Parker

Posted on 09/07/2017 1:25:36 PM PDT by gubamyster

Several influential House conservatives are privately plotting ways to use the legislative calendar this fall to push their hard-line agenda — including quiet discussions about possibly mounting a leadership challenge to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan.

The group has gone so far as to float the idea of recruiting former House speaker Newt Gingrich or former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum as potential replacements for Ryan (R-Wis.) should there be a rebellion. The Constitution does not require that an elected member of the House serve as speaker.

While the chances that a non-House member could mount a credible threat to Ryan are exceedingly slim, the fact the group has even toyed with the idea underscores their desire to create trouble for GOP leaders if they believe their demands are not being addressed.

The closed-door conversations are being led by Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, in consultation with his allies on the right, in particular Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist who recently returned to his perch as executive chairman of the Breitbart News website. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and other Freedom Caucus members are also involved in the talks to varying degrees, according to nearly a dozen people with knowledge of the discussions.

On Wednesday, Meadows, Jordan and Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) took their concerns directly to Ryan, telling him in a private meeting in the Capitol that his failure to enact conservative priorities could diminish his support among conservatives.

File under humorous? These two Great Falls, Virginia, mansion living people are not even members of Congress. Gingrich is retired and seems happy popping up on TV, not sure what Santorum is doing but I cannot imagine many people being interested in seeing this liar in DC.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Every fall we get the story about the revolt for Speaker but come election time all the dogs start licking the boots of the status quo.

Santorum may be a nice guy but he naive.

He was far too slow to get on the Trump train. He also stood in the way of two candidates (Cain and Newt) in 2012 who could hav wooped Mittens and Barry is they hadn’t been distracted

It should already be diminished, to about 0.

wait, my reading comprehension must be even worse than normal. How is someone who isn’t even holding office supposed to be speaker?

Don’t have to be members of Congress to be Speaker of the House.

You or I could be chosen.................

Santorum used to run the Republican Senate’s “K Street Project” back in the 2000s. He was Mr. Insider, getting donations from lobbyists to put their provisions in bills. The idea that he’s some type of conservative outsider is hysterical. That is a pure fiction created by his presidential campaign.

Wild speculation specifically calculated to distract and divide. Funny, I don’t recall such wild speculation or preposterous whispering from the WaPo about Nancy Pelosi and Democrats.

Rick Santorum has been trying to get elected to something for years. He sends his very nice family through this circus over and over.
Might be time to move on to some other goal and live a more normal life.

Newt is more unpredictable than the president.
He may be better as an outside advisor, such as Giulliani or Bannon.
Don’t be surprised in Mitt starts dropping hints about being ‘interested’.
It’s time to add some new faces, new names to the GOP bench.

After all of these years apparently conservatives STILL have no real challenger for speaker of the house.

Amazing. I thought Gramnesty was so wonderful during Whitewater that S.C. rewarded him with Thurmond’s seat. Cruz? I dunno. I think that some of these folks are the best we can hope for given their home state. Santorum is ok ALL things considered. Hagel, Kay Bailey? Term limits would do the job.
