One used to see this argument made frequently. If one accepts it, time is wasted trying to reason with evil itself.
That's the 'tell' that it was a legitimate election. It was not the result they expected. Somehow, all that groundwork (in years, decades) went horribly wrong. Where was the harvest?
They don't really care much about changing hearts and minds, but rather are concerned with whatever it takes to maintain control. Having their Established order roto-trumped, they have defaulted to violence.
Evil always overplays its hand.
