I think he did the right thing.
Have a CG bud that lives on the West side. Tells me a sprinkle floods the place as it us’tah be rice paddies.
He was OK last night but trips into VMS immediately which tells me maybe his phone cable and associated hardware is under water
It’s impossible to evacuate Harris County, or Fort Bend County for that matter. The minute you give that evacuate order the roads will be completely gridlocked. Nobody will go anywhere for days. Happened with Katrina. People were literally stranded for days in their vehicles or had to abandon them.
I wish we'd been in the direct path. This endless rain is worse than any storm I've ever been through here. Being on the dirty side of this storm is worse than being in the eye of the storm.
I’m inclined to defend him on this one. The Hurricane Rita evacuation was planned about as well as possible, and it was a complete clusterflock.
Not a fan of Sylvester, but he probably did the right thing. No way to tell which areas are going to get flooded-out, and this is a big county where flooding can occur almost anywhere. People that live here probably know best whether or not they live in an area that might flood given the predictions of record setting rainfall.
He knew which areas would flood. What’s his excuse for not telling those folks to leave?
One can’t “evacuate” the 4th largest city in the country.
Never depend on .gov. Most people understand that. Nobody needs .gov to tell them to leave or not.
No doubt, he should have evacuated flood-prone areas.
With possible 130-140 mph winds on the way, nobody would have to tell me it might be a good idea to seek refuge inland.
I’d find something to do over 100 miles north for few days.
“You cannot put in the city of Houston 2.3 million people on the road — that is dangerous,”
you mean like 2:00 friday afternoon???
What happened to the Lesbo Mayor?
Can someone tell me how this is a democrat town?
Some stories popping up on the topic:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/27/us/houston-evacuation-hurricane-harvey/index.html
At a Friday news conference, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) encouraged residents in low-lying and coastal areas of the state to evacuate, even if a mandatory evacuation order had not been issued.
“Even if an evacuation order hasn’t been issued by your local official, if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating,” Abbott said. “What you don’t know, and what nobody else knows right now, is the magnitude of flooding that will be coming.
“You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you could be subject to a search and rescue.”
The governor’s warning was in sharp contrast to the advice local and county officials had been dispensing for days: to shelter and stay in place. And it set off a scramble by local officials on social media to tell their residents otherwise.

Where is President Bush’s house located?
Maybe the Mayor will be correct. Time will tell. Contrarily,to not learn the lessons of Katrina and other Hurricanes,I feel no pity. From this point on, everything will be blamed on the President. It’s the same set up as Katrina. The left has politically weaponized Natural Disasters. Even Sandy was deflected off of Obama and stuck to Gov. Christie and may have gotten Obama re-elected.
Well he could have opened up the Astrodome where people could stay.
In fact some of the same people that went to the Superdome during Katrina may have ended up in Houston and would know the drill. :-)
Government knows best. People can’t be trusted to evacuate themselves, they must be guided by Government.
Excuse me while of go throw up.
I don’t like Sylvester, but in this case he should be cut some slack. Evacuating or not evacuating, both have risks as Hurricane Rita proved.
Having said that, doubt the lefties are going to tone down their attacks on the President.
I am in the unincorporated area just north of Houston and I agree with Turner. The mess of the Rita evacuation is seared in the memory of everyone who tried to leave. Everyone I know swears they will never leave again. Some might go to friends or family who are on known high ground, but they won’t try to be part of a mass evacuation. Evacuation of 6 million people to Dallas is not practical and we could not evacuate west, east or south. This is a 500-year flood for our area (means there is a 0.2% chance this much flooding will occur in any one year), and our area is all of 6 counties, so there is not much to do but wait it out. Neighbors are helping neighbors and strangers are pitching in with food, transportation and shelter. We aremnot whining about how the federal government is not helping fast enough. I generally don’t vote Democrat, but if I had to, I like Sylvester Turner. He is actually a leader who seems to care about the whole city.
