The Progressive War Against the Dead
Townhall.com ^ | August 24, 2017 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 08/24/2017 5:02:11 AM PDT by Kaslin

Much of the country has demanded the elimination of references to, and images of, people of the past -- from Christopher Columbus to Robert E. Lee -- who do not meet our evolving standards of probity.

In some cases, such damnation may be understandable if done calmly and peacefully -- and democratically, by a majority vote of elected representatives.

Few probably wish to see a statue in a public park honoring Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the founding members of the Ku Klux Klan, or Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney, who wrote the majority opinion in the racist Dred Scott decision that set the stage for the Civil War four years later.

But cleansing the past is a dangerous business. The wide liberal search for more enemies of the past may soon take progressives down hypocritical pathways they would prefer not to walk.

In the present climate of auditing the past, it is inevitable that Margaret Sanger's Planned Parenthood will have to be disassociated from its founder. Sanger was an unapologetic racist and eugenicist who pushed abortion to reduce the non-white population.

Should we ask that Ruth Bader Ginsburg resign from the Supreme Court? Even with the benefit of 21st-century moral sensitivity, Ginsburg still managed to echo Sanger in a racist reference to abortion ("growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of").

Why did we ever mint a Susan B. Anthony dollar? The progressive suffragist once said, "I will cut off this right arm of mine before I will ever work or demand the ballot for the Negro and not the woman."

At some point they’ll go after anybody whose relatives fought for the Confederacy.

No, that would be too difficult for them. It's far easier for them to just take the position that all white people are Nazi-leaning, Confederate-supporting racists. I mean, after all, all of us white people look the same to them ....

We need to tear down columns on colonial style houses, since that is a remnant of our slave era.

Progressives aren’t against the dead - they rely on them for their votes!

So...we’re supposed to forget, and destroy, anything to do with our past, and the Confederacy.

What we’re left with is...”no confederacy ever existed”.

Well, if - as the claim, the war was about ‘slavery’ - and the confederacy is to be forever erased from the minds of the people, then by logic, slavery never existed.

If, as they claim, the war was about ‘slavery’, but memories of the war are to be totally wiped from our psyche, the ‘slavery’ must also be forgotten. If there was ‘no war’, then there was NOTHING to fight over (according to the left).

So, we don’t need to hear another word about the struggles of slavery, because the confederates didn’t exist to fight such a war.

Seems to me, their victimhood meme would be better served to leave all confederate monuments in place to constantly remind people of the “war of oppression”.

If the Civil War, and the Confederacy, go away, then so does slavery.

There, we’ve saved 40 acres and a mule, right off the bat.

I don't know how soon it will be, but supporters of abortion are walking right along side the slave owners. In front of, really, because at least the slave owners generally didn't kill the slaves.

A preborn person is a separate, unique individual human being, and a DNA test would prove that, but Democrats are science deniers.

Pointing out the hypocrisy of the left may be useful in recruiting non-leftist to oppose them, but it will not make them stop or even slow down their war against America's traditions and history.

Those who think otherwise have no understanding of how the totalitarian left thinks and behaves. They need a crash course from the teaching of George Orwell, who understood them perfectly:

"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past." George Orwell, 1984

"Every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered." George Orwell, 1984

It's all about power and control and nothing else.

Since the White House was built by slave labor, it must be torn down and re-built by Trump. I remember when Mrs Obama complained about the WH being built by slaves. Also should all the old Plantations be torn down?

No, you are very wrong.

This is a blatant assault on the Constitution of the United States of America and all Amendments thereto and to the Bill of Rights.

These despicable turds want nothing less than the entire downfall of the basic document of our enumerated rights.

They will not stop unless stopped.

This has less to do with the 1st Amendment than it does the 2nd.

As as far as the authors lying first sentence, where he (she, it or pervert, take your pick) says: "Most people..."...that is another blatant lie and an assault on it's own.

These journalistic hacks are acting at the direction of organized factions that have no less of an intent than that of destroying the United States.

Period.

It's about time "most people" realize that and act accordingly.

I understand Hanson is setting up his examples that follow, but, tell me, when have libs ever regretted anything they did? They just turn to the next emotional issue and/or next "victim."

Victor Davis Hanson does not speak for me, nor does he speak for "much of the country".

He is a political trash hack in worn-out conservative clothing.

As a registered democrat, he claims to have voted conservatively on more than one occasion, however, he lies.

In short, he's full of crap.

He occasionally throws out a line or two that makes some sense in the overall view of things, only to later fling do-do all over those that have stopped to read his earlier crap.

Make no mistake, this hack is the face of those that would take the US Constitution into the toilet with them and use it for things other than ensuring the rights of a free nation.

Yes, I read the article.

I've read enough of VDH to know he is the enemy, as much as CNN, the Wash Po, the Old Grey Slut and all the other obfuscating pieces of shit that shovel their crap day in and day out.

He has nothing to say that any self-respecting true conservative would want to hear.

Boston, New York and all the major northern port cities with many snowflakes were a key part of the slave trade in the 1700s.

Many of their colleges were funded by the slave merchants, directly or indirectly.

If they want clean hands they need to go to Antarctica or Uranus.

For now the statues are proxies for us living breathing patriots. The next step is the actual physical destruction of us.

Anybody care to guess how long it will be before those fools start demanding “faces” be removed for our currency?

Haven’t we all had about enough of their BS? Time to start shooting those fools.
