A debate has ignited in Australia over a statue of British explorer Captain James Cook, which has a plaque saying he "discovered this territory".

The 19th Century statue, in Sydney's central Hyde Park, has come under scrutiny following recent discussion over Confederate monuments in the US.

Critics say the inscription overlooks indigenous Australians, while others defend it as being part of history....

Well, yeah...he was in the middle of some grab-the-Indian-chief-and-go episode....when things went south...dying at the remarkable age of fifty. It should be noted he died in Hawaii.

As for Cook...he compacted ten life-times into a fifty-year span. His entire life reads like some epic novel.

It is all about discrediting Western Civilization.

There are no statutes of Aboriginals discovering Europe.

Excellent idea. Win/win. Australians say - hey we were here all along and the Europeans stumbled onto us.

I have a feeling that would not be the end of it. Then the liberals would think -- wait a minute -- the Europeans came over here and tainted this pristine wilderness ...

The folks who are trashing his statue, are probably avid followers of Peter Pan.

Hey, they have to get history somewhere you know...

Australia still honors the EUREKA REBELLION rebels whose rebellion only lasted an hour. The Eureka flag is proudly flown by many.

In Canada, Louis Riel, hanged for treason and murder is still honored with statues and memorials.

In the USA, George Washington is now hated, same for Jefferson, Jackson, Lee, Davis, even Lincoln. Their monuments and flags are destroyed on sight by many.

Did the Aborigenes in any way document their discovery?

No? Thought not.

Eff history, eh?

Clarification: "Australia debates" means this is another issue being concocted by the Greens, ABC, and the Fairfax Press.

Most Australians are unaware of it. I expect that to change.

I’m a huge Cook fan. I’ve snorkeled in the bay he was murdered by the Hawaiians.

The world of savages are showing their true blood thirsty nature. An inch has been given, now they are after the miles.

Pandering globalism and diversity will be the death of us all.

Captain Cook came by New Zealand and Hawaii too..

The folks in the Sandwich Islands didn’t like him...they would have pulled down his statue but all they had was he, himself...

they had to settle for putting a spear through him...

Australia needs to honor its indigenous people by turning off its electricity—forever.

Now that would be some serious virtue-signaling!

Di Blasio, are you listening?
