Trump Should Have Followed His Instincts On Afghanistan
Daily Caller ^ | 23 August 2017 | Scott Greer

Posted on 08/23/2017 1:45:59 PM PDT by Lorianne

In his address Monday night, Trump admitted that he went against his instincts on doubling-down on America’s military commitment in Afghanistan

But McMaster was apparently able to convince Trump with the help of one picture. The national security advisor was able to persuade about the promise of staying in Afghanistan with an image of Afghan women wearing short skirts in the 1970s. What are we going to do differently now that will convince the locals to be just like us?

The answer is that we are not going to do any differently, and we’re still sticking to the same delusions that buttressed the nation-building frenzy of the Bush years.

Trump may say that this he’s not engaged in nation-building, but he was convinced to stay in Afghanistan on the basis that we could make the country more western. That sounds awfully like our mission in the country is nation-building.

America has been there for 16 years and there are only few signs of progress. The Taliban is still around and nearly as strong as it was before we arrived. Western values and norms are mostly absent in a country where Islamic fundamentalism still dominates. It doesn’t appear that whatever government we set up will last long without the aid of American arms.

“This isn’t just Obama. After Bush had it for 7 years Afghanistan was a backwards hell hole. As it has been for millennia...
Its a fools errand to think that place can be made peaceful and prosperous. At best you can create an ersatz “peace” bought with massive bribes and allowing an orgy of poppy cultivation.”

Nation building is not the goal. Killing terrorist is.

The article that you posted uses unsourced nonsense. You do understand that, right?

Yes, he should have. We do NOT need to be in Afghanistan.

You can never kill enough of these maggots. The new rules of engagement will still. Or be sufficient, not with McMaster believing you have to apologize to these animals if you dare touch their evil book. The media will jump on the first sign of an “atrocity” and hang it around Trump’s neck. He’s put himself in a no-win situation.

Those of us who are questioning this decision are not abandoning Trump. We are genuinely concerned that he is getting bad advice and, in my opinion, that people like McMaster are following their own agenda and not that of the President. We want Trump to Make America Great Again and we have an obligation to speak up when he’s following bad advice.

Look at like cockroaches or ants in your house. You will probably never kill them all but you can keep them in check. Think of killing fields.

No, Bush gave us ISIS by getting rid of Saddam, and de-stabilizing Iraq. The dumbest thing the US did was allowing ourselves to be drawn into futile conflicts in Muslim countries.

DEAD WRONG!

Hussein had already attacked four of his neighbor nations, flat out invading two of them.

He would not abide by international restrictions.

If that were all, it would be bad enough, but he and his sons were killing Iraqis for kicks.

He was also verbally and monetarily backing terrorist groups. He was paying $25k a pop for suicide killers in Israel. He was compensating their families.

He also advocated openly for terrorism against Europe and the United States.

He was removed.

Bush did not destabilize the region. Saddam Hussein did.

This tired retread logic simply doesn’t stand up to criticism.

I’m calling BS here. More hysterical anti-McMaster nonsense.

Afghanistan must never be allowed to become a hotbed for terrorist training. It's a thorny issue—one the President felt strongly about—and one which he has changed his mind regarding.

Honestly, not having access to the information President Trump has access to on Afghanistan, I can't second-guess him, as long as he has thoughtfully considered all options. I certainly don't think this suddenly makes him a globalist neocon. I'll prayerfully defer to his judgement—and God's guidance—for good or ill...

After the removal of the Taliban and the formation of the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan in late 2001 and 2002, respectively, the Afghan Armed Forces was gradually rebuilt by NATO forces in the country, primarily by the United States Armed Forces.

After the formation of the Karzai administration in late 2001, a unified Afghan Armed Forces was gradually reestablished by the United States and its allies. Initially, a new ground force, the Afghan National Army (ANA), was created, along with an Army Air Corps, as an integral part of the Army. This Air Corps later split off to become and independent Afghan Air Force (AAF). Commandos and Special Forces were also trained and formed as a part of the Afghan National Army. Training was managed initially by the U.S. Office of Military Cooperation, followed by other U.S. organisations and then Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, and is now being run by the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan.

Yeah - an old picture of women in T-shirts is what convinced Trump to keep Iran and Pakistan from turning Afghanistan into an even bigger terrorist State than it was before.....

Obama ‘evolved’ on every damn issue that ultimately screwed the Country, and he’s praised.

Trump admittedly recognizes the complexities of prematurely evacuating military operations, and he’s excoriated.

Dubya was committed to doing the right thing militarily, and he was excoriated.

Hussein was no worse than what followed him. They are all thugs. The nations he invaded were Muslim nations. Let them fight. They all hate us. The Saudis gave us the 911 hijackers. That is how they repaid us.

When Hussein’s sect was removed from power, the other side saw its chance for revenge. Then the fight was on, and ISIS came to be. It was directly because the US stupidly deposed Hussein, who held that dump together.

Hussein was worse that followed him. If you think about it, you know it.

Yes ISIS exploded, but the leadership of Iraq wasn’t nearly as vile to it’s own citizens and it wasn’t being strategic with regard to attacking it’s neighbors.

Iraq has done a pretty good job of cleaning out ISIS. It didn’t simply adopt ISIS’ global outlook.

ISIS is not the problem. Islam is the problem. Unless one proposes genocide, the only real solution is to get Islam out of western nations and get US troops out of the Middle East. Anything else is just playing a PC game and pretending we can “win”.
