The Republican majority leader of New York's state Senate has come clean about his struggle with alcohol dependency.
Long Island state Senator John J. Flanagan, 56, said in a statement on Sunday that he had completed an alcohol rehab program, drawing a supportive response from colleagues in both parties.
'Alcohol was becoming a crutch to deal with pressure I was under related to my responsibilities as Majority Leader of the New York State Senate,' Flanagan said in the four-paragraph statement in response to inquiries from Newsday.
Flanagan said he 'took control of the situation and sought immediate help so I could overcome it and move forward.'
The married father of three entered the program last month and reportedly completed it successfully earlier this week.
'I took this step to ensure this dependency would not affect my ability to do my job or represent my constituents or the members of our Senate Republican Majority,' Flanagan said.
'This is a step I needed to take for myself and for my family, and it will allow me to continue to serve and to give back to my community and state,' he said.
Both Democrat and Republican politicians in the state expressed their support for Flanagan.

‘No one is immune’: Republican New York Senate leader says he sought treatment for alcohol dependency
No one is immune
Don’t try and rope me in to your own weakness you bastard.
“Isn’t it amazing how disgraced politicians only have a political party affiliation in news stories when they’re republicans?”
Nonsense,Wilbur Mills mad the national news.
.
Easy bro.....Alchoholism is by no means definitive of weakness. There quite a bit of research that supports the premise that it’s genetic, at least the tendency toward it is.
Alchoholics that stop drinking and maintain sobriety are some of the strongest people you’ll ever know.
And you know what you do if there’s a genetic predisposition? You steer clear of booze.
Reminds me of the “Everyone is at equal risk of contracting HIV” bullshit that was forced down our throats.
Wilbur Mills, who cares.
Tell us about the Tidal Basin Bombshell!!!!!!
That was over 40 years ago when there was a semblance of objectivity in the media.
And just how does one necessarily know they have a genetic predisposition?
The research on the subject is recent.
I have no sympathy for those who continue to wallow in their addiction but great respect for those who overcome it.
Flanagan ...
“And just how does one necessarily know they have a genetic predisposition?”
the number of alcoholics (folks who’ve been destroyed by uncontrollable drinking) in the immediate family: parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and siblings.
it’s usually pretty evident.
Uh, no, those of us that do not drink alcohol are immune. Liberalism is a mental disease
Living in New York and being an R-Legislature would cause anyone to have a problem with alcohol. Surprising that there aren’t more...
“Alchoholics that stop drinking and maintain sobriety are some of the strongest people youll ever know”
Don Imus?
What you say may be true.
However the statement No one is immune is still untrue.
It is also an unnecessary argument, and detracts from the allegedly brave message. If an alcoholic wants to announce that he is taking steps to control his weakness, and wants to get patted on the back for it ... fine.
But he shouldn't try roping in others by claiming everyone is a potential addict.
If I was a declared republican in New York I think I would drink heavily as well
This is part or whole of what alcoholism treatment does or can do
Demonized the liquor to absolve the character of the drinker
I’ve always questioned that labeling it a disease nomenclature
Spoken like a true codependent
Yet another word
I’ve dealt with alcoholic loved ones my entire adult life
One common thread
Selfishness
Like creative people
Their self awareness orbit has a short radius
I am glad he found his limit and got back his life, for now.
Don Imus what?
