A devastated family wants answers after their beloved Catahoula hound dog was shot and killed last month in their front yard by an Ocoee police officer. But a police report released this week sheds little light on what happened.
Stevens Bertrand, a school resource officer at Ocoee High, shot the 11-year-old dog named Duke in the head outside Charlie and Lisa Brooks home on July 17.
I couldnt believe something like that happened. I was completely shocked, Charlie Brooks said.
The incident has prompted questions and outrage from the Brooks family, who expressed frustration at the Police Departments vague description of the shooting in its official report and the lack of disciplinary action taken against Bertrand.
Ocoee Police Lt. Bill Wagner declined to discuss the events that led to Bertrand firing his gun, citing an ongoing internal investigation. He said an Internal Affairs investigator reached out to the family but has not received a response.
According to the police report, on the day Duke was shot, Bertrand and two other school resource officers were assigned to patrol Starke Lake, across from the Brooks home on East Silver Star Road.
Wagner said marine patrolling is a common assignment for officers in the summertime.
The three officers spotted a boat that they suspected was in violation of city codes. According to their report, the boat was at risk of becoming derelict and had tags that werent affixed prominently. . ."

I’m in L/E. Never had to shoot any animal, but I am confused:
What is a “school resource officer”?
Why is he in a boat if he is detached to some... school?
If he was in a boat doing boat stuff, how did he kill a dog, on land?
I’ve imagined a scenario where a police office shoots one of my dogs, just defending our home. It doesn’t end well for anyone.
Why yes, but the other side is not talking. Maybe we should all be silent until the government has spoken. Would that make you happy?
School resource officer is, depending on location, a truancy officer or glorified security guard with arrest powers within a school setting.

Where does the boat come in?
(Oh, I guess it’s the summer.....extra hands.)
God only knows.
Sounds like they were out doing “make work” tasks.
Well, the middle school is near the lake.
But if one kills a POLICE DOG, they go to Prison..
The solution is to remove LEO immunity to civil suit.and require, as a condition of employment, that LEOs must purchase malpractice insurance. If they cost the insurer more than the actuaries deem reasonable, they will be unemployable in law enforcement.
I have big Rottweiler’s
I had sheriff posse come to my house two years ago all strapped
They actually allowed me to put 300 pounds of Rott muscle in their run
I’ve got acreage
The dogs were livid
But yes Tennessee is famous for cops shoots dogs
That’s first thing I said to them when they came to the door
My oldest son had already grabbed the dogs by collars
Some Barney shoots my dog and it’s on
The dog drew first!
Thank goodness he didn’t have thumbs or I would’ve been a goner.
Only with my highly trained spider sense was I able to escape unharmed.
Now I can safely return home to my family tonight.
At least the officer went home safe.
God forbid that there was a rambunctious child in the yard when the police showed up.
Rule of thumb: Do not call the police if you have dogs or children around. And do not call the police for a “welfare check” or a domestic disturbance, unless you want somebody to be killed.
School is out for the summer in florida
Yes.
Though summer school utilizes the school officers too.
Depends on when they run that over there.
I am the biggest supporter of Police but this new kill the dog thing is disgusting.
In Charlotte, NC, resource officers are actually city police. They don’t hang at the school all day, but they do spend a significant amount of time there depending on the school and history of trouble.
Only by someone who doesn't know anything about dogs at all.
A Catahoula looks nothing like a pit bull, both in terms of jaw structure and body type. Catahoulas have narrow jaws; Pit Bulls have very wide jaws. Catahoulas have light frames, in contrast to the much heavier frames of Pit Bulls. Catahoulas are also significantly taller at the shoulder as well. In general, Catahoulas are not even colored similarly to Pit Bulls, although I'm sure there are exceptions.
Basically, the two breeds look totally different. Not that the officer would have been any more justified in shooting a pit bull, given the same circumstances.
I owned a Catahoula Leopard Cow Hog Dog a couple of decades ago, and she was the most intelligent dog I've ever had in my family. Catahoulas, in my experience, aren't particularly aggressive either.
This just happens too often, and it never used to. What a bunch of wusses police have become, to do this type of thing so frequently and readily!
And the best way to remedy that was to kill their dog. It's so obvious!
Ah, okers.
