Why are thousands of Haitians streaming into Canada from the U.S.?

Heading to Canada is one of the only options seen by many of the 50,000 Haitians who've been living under temporary protection status in the U.S. — but many don't know they face deportation here, too, should their asylum claim be rejected.

The temporary protection status for Haitians in the U.S. granted after the 2010 earthquake is set to expire in January.

The Department of Homeland Security considers Haiti to be a safe country now, and it's warned that the U.S. doesn't intend to renew that status, prompting the deluge of asylum seekers crossing into Canada.

"There is a major humanitarian crisis coming up this January," said Emmanuel Depas, a New York-based immigration lawyer, who was born in Haiti.

Depas said many of his clients' only hope is coming to Canada. Going back to Haiti would mean living in poverty, facing persecution or, for a fifth of them with U.S.-born children, being separated from their families, he said.

"I've even suggested looking into Canada to people because there aren't that many options," he told CBC News Thursday.

Because free loaders are very astute at detecting a set of brass balls, and also detecting the complete lack of a pair.

Hence the Canadian migration.

What about the Clinton Global Initiative?

Maybe someone should bus a bunch of Haitians to Chautauqua where the Clintons live so the Haitians can get themselves some of that CGI money.

There was already a large Haitian population in Montreal and Haiti is a French-speaking country (albeit many speak a dialect), so Quebec is probably a better fit for them than the U.S.A. anyway. At some point the flow will become too large for existing resources in Quebec and the government will close the border.

The deal now is that people walk across in view of a police officer, and are immediately taken into custody so that they have a year or two to wait for a refugee hearing. The success rate for becoming a refugee is about one in three, Haiti is not considered a country that people cannot be sent back to, and eventually many are.

This is going to go on for a little while longer then the political winds will change in Canada and the Liberals will change their stand as they always do when electoral defeat looms large. Our next scheduled election is in 2019 so this change is likely to come next year.

The Conservative opposition has already taken the expected stand (close the borders) and public opinion is showing signs of shifting.

As I’ve said on here many times before, the political balance in Canada is not vastly different than in your country but we don’t have an electoral college to save us from the tyranny of majority opinion based in the liberal cities. In numerical terms, if we had a Trump vs Clinton type of showdown, it would probably go closer to 30-50 than 45-50, our third parties are larger.

But these people from Haiti have few options, their own country is a basket case due to many decades of corrupt government propped up by the so-called free world.

Here in S Florida there thousands of Haitian refugees that were given temp. status working in landscaping, car washes, maids and so on. Most seem ok and were very supportive of Trump.....but they are supposed to leave soon. That is the deal.

Fort Pierce Florida is Haiti’s second most populous city.

While generally being good honest folks they are anything but
energetic hard workers.

Going back to Haiti would mean living in poverty, facing persecution or, for a fifth of them with U.S.-born children, being separated from their families, he said.

Why? Why can't the children go home with their parents to Haiti or wherever an illegal is from.

This is why the anchor baby loophole must be closed. It was never meant to be this way. It's time to fix it.

I don't know how it is where you live, but the average native born Canadian I talk to is dead set against refugees and moslem immigration. This is particularly more apparent when you leave the cities.

I just came back from a trip to Northern Ontario. The people are very friendly, very helpful, and very well armed.

Is that language French? Sounds more like a really mush-mouthed Creole to me.

Haitian Creole (Kreol) is unique, like several of the other French-based patois from the Caribbean, having components of many more languages added to the French base.

I was speaking in Kreol with a Haitian that I had just met and was stopped after by a woman who blurted out to me that "...that was the worst French I have ever heard in my life! Where did you learn that terrible French"?

Informed her that it was not French but Kreol. The combined look of shock and indignation on her face made me burst out in laughter and walk away. It is a language all it's own that sounds like really, really bad French.

Someone answer this. Why is the DR relatively stable and is a top tourist destination, while Haiti is a corrupt, crappy hole?

Great observation.

We have stories of what it is like to drive across the border from Haiti to the DR...STARK contrasts just miles apart.

It's mind-numbing to look at current pictures of PAP where some areas look like the earthquake happened last week instead of 7 1/2 years ago.
