WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators examining money laundering accusations against President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort hope to push him to cooperate with their probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia, two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team is examining Manafort's financial and real estate records in New York as well as his involvement in Ukrainian politics, the officials said.
Between 2006 and 2013, Manafort bought three New York properties, including one in Trump Tower in Manhattan. He paid for them in full and later took out mortgages against them. A former senior U.S. law enforcement official said that tactic is often used as a means to hide the origin of funds gained illegally. Reuters has no independent evidence that Manafort did this.
The sources also did not say whether Mueller has uncovered any evidence to charge Manafort with money laundering, but they said doing so is seen by investigators as critical in getting his full cooperation in their investigation.
"If Mueller's team can threaten criminal charges against Manafort, they could use that as leverage to convince him to cooperate," said one of the sources.

Each day that goes by Mueller continues his witch hunt, is another nail in Trump’s coffin. Why Trump doesn’t fire him now is beyond comprehension. Trump is at war and he should take out his enemy forthwith.
And Scooter is a tailor made case study why and when to keep your mouth shut. If he kept it shut, they can't wrongly construe to make a legal case.
I disagree with you and leave it at that..so many money launderers are connected to various goings on with parties involved that they have to be Investigated to find out what happened.

I'm not arguing that Manafort didn't launder money. I'm saying that assuming he did, that crime is not associated with any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and the campaign of President Donald Trump.
Say for sake of argument that somebody in the Trump campaign perpetrated a domestic violence or criminal reckless driving or provided material assistance to a terrorist organization. Of course those should be investigated. My point is "not by Mueller."
-- Timing on Manafort's deals are suspicious. Explain how a crime committed to the benefit of Manafort in 2008 or 2013 has a direct connection to an election campaign that began in the middle of 2015.
Oh well. If and when Trump's lawyer's argue that Mueller's investigation is outside of what he was authorized by Manafort, you'll be arguing the other side.
Btw..for those of you that dont know...lawsuits can be used to launder money..also can be used to move money around in the fraudulent world of stocks..

Given Russian/ukranian involvement with parties it is fair game for Investigation. There is a quid pro quo concern over russian money and the election .manafort is knee deep in foreign money.

So even if Manafort is found to have committed financial crimes between 2006 and 2013, they can use this to force him to testify that there was collusion between Trump campaign and Russia? Trump did even fire him earlier in the campaign.
I think Rosenstein is the only one that can fire him. It wouldn’t look good if Trump did so. But Trump can certainly expose Mueller and his liberal army for what they are.
Now you are putting words in my mouth, or changing your argument. You have argued that the correct legal interpretation of Mueller's authorization includes events not related to the Trump campaign.
I don’t think the President can fire anybody in the DOJ except the AG and Deputy AG. It’s not a situation unique to Mueller.
