Concealed handgun permits in the United States soared by 1.83 million since last July, setting a record for the fourth consecutive year, according to an analysis released Thursday.
That brings the total number of concealed handgun permit holders in the country to 16.3 million, with some of the biggest increases occurring among women and African-Americans, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) said.

It’s probably a safe bet to guess that since the issuing of concealed carry licenses started on a large scale across the nation, that most license holders have been conservatives. Now that Trump is in office, it would be very interesting to see the current trend of who the new permit holders are by party affiliation, rather than by race or gender.
And I don't recall the background check form asking for one's race. Even if it did aren't they supposed to destroy those and not keep them as a defacto gun registration?
I believe this will have some impact on crime rates, but not as much as you’d think. Now, if the majority were packing heat, I’d agree, but the biggest predictor of crime stats is the number of available criminals a locale has, not guns.
The major difference between Vermont and Chicago is the number of available criminals.

You can’t have a felony conviction and get a permit, so yes, most holders of CCPs are held by white conservatives.
That statement is a bit too broad...
Not only does it ask for race, but it also narrows it down to Hispanic or non-Hispanic. Probably an Obama era thing.

I would like to state that we have had concealed carry and open carry in the state of Missouri, and in particular for St. Louis city for awhile now and it is not safer, but worse.
St. Louis is not operating in a vacuum either.
One must be cognizant that in many cases, those who are getting concealed carry should not be permitted to do so because of their violent criminal history. St. Louis City and County are very liberal in handing out probation and Suspended Imposition of Sentences (effectively a non-conviction) that are not a bar to those who seek concealed carry.
Open carry has not caught on much, and the one local story where a guy tried to do it at the zoo, got all weapons effectively banned. (I maintain that if you are doing it right, no one knows you are carrying concealed)
I have personally dealt with a half dozen individuals in the last two weeks who have concealed carry and have a sociopathic desire to “kill a mutha@##$%”, including one who was carrying a Draco knockoff under his seat. He expressed a sincere desire to kill another unknown motorist with said weapon because that motorist “mean mugged” him. (Looked at him hard).
Not everyone should have firearms.
OK. But is the govt allowed to keep these records or must they be destroyed after a period of time.
