Nice article, but sad in terms of the environment-like the will was sapped out of the people there.
I visited Europe for the first time back in the 80s, and this was my impression even back then. It seemed enervated, entropic, and spiritless ... kind of like the world’s largest open-air museum.
The last few times I’ve been there, it hasn’t gotten any better, although I agree that it was cleaner. Driving through Germany or Denmark, you wouldn’t know you were in a foreign country except that the street signs have umlauts.

I remember years back reading right here on F.R. to visit Europe NOW, before it became downtown Beirut. (Beirut, Lebanon was a trouble spot at the time.) It’s taken a few more years than predicted, but the major European cities are being taken over by “the invasion”.
