Delays leave transgender military recruits in limbo
BBC ^ | July 11, 2017 | By Joel Gunter

When then-US Defence Secretary Ash Carter announced last June that transgender people would be permitted to serve openly in the armed forces it was a landmark moment for thousands of troops who had hidden their identities and put off medical treatment, as well as for potential recruits unable to join up.

But a year on from that decision, progress opening the armed forces to transgender Americans has stalled amid delays and attacks from congressional Republicans.

On the eve of the deadline for the Pentagon to begin allowing new transgender recruits, on the first of this month, Defence Secretary James Mattis announced a six-month delay so that the services could "evaluate more carefully" the impact of transgender troops on "readiness and lethality".

Some congressional Republicans celebrated the delay and have since called for the policy to be reversed entirely.

Vicky Hartzler, Republican for Missouri, introduced an amendment at the end of June to the National Defense Authorization Act calling for all transgender service members to be honourably discharged and for funds that would have been used for their medical care to be directed to buying new aircraft.

On Friday, she introduced a new amendment which would bar any military funding from being used to provide medical care related to gender transition, other than for mental health treatment. Her Republican colleague Steve King, Congressman for Iowa, tabled a separate amendment which would ban any funding for gender reassignment surgery or for promotion of what he called the "transgender agenda".

The amendments will go before the rules committee on Wednesday.

I’m sorry; but, should there even BE “transgender military recruits”? Is there no longer a screening process to become a soldier in the U.S. military?

So, how many soldiers are affected by this?

And of that number, what fraction were persuaded to sign up by Obama LGBT propaganda and the prospect of government-funded transition medical services?

There are thousands of transgender troops? I would have guessed “dozens.”

I find these numbers a little hard to believe.

Dozens is the number. So making women military personnel take showers with dudes is going to help the defense of the country in what way?

So, how many soldiers are affected by this?

All of them. This is a huge change that's causing changes in hundreds of regulations throughout the military. They need to come up with policies for how they're going to provide rooms, rest rooms, showers, etc. They'll need to address how they can be deployed. Can someone going through the surgical procedures be sent to a remote location where they can't continue their treatment? Security regulations need to be rewritten to allow them to get clearances. Prior to the "new military", gays had trouble getting clearances because it's something they could be blackmailed for.

I work at an AF HQ unit and they're busy re-writing personnel regulations and figuring out how to treat trans genders. How do you address them? Can you get in trouble for addressing them improperly? When you deploy to the middle-east, do you provide them with separate shower facilities and tents? What if they get an assignment to a place that they might be in danger due to their transgenerism. Should they be exempt for going to assignments like this? How do you make it fair for non-transgenders if they always get the crappy assignments?

What I find amusing is that we are told that these Transgender people are so damned great and not having them in the military is a loss of talent...

But apparently they cannot budget and save for their own “gender surgeries”, I checked online and the amount they have to save up for is anywhere between 20 thousand to 50 thousand. Basically the price of buying a new car/truck/SUV but paying for it all up front. Which means you have to save up a little bit each month for a few years.

But they expect OTHER people, namely the US tax payer to pay? And just how exactly committed ARE they if they expect someone else to pay for their “lopitoffofmy or addadictomy”, I would assume not all that committed to the point of needing to actually be committed...

Well I guess the military isn’t enlisting them for their financial prowess / talent ... Maybe the military should hire transgenders that are actually able to budget and scrimp and save for their surgeries on their own to head the financial and budgeting departments... be better than hiring anyone who thinks they are owed somethign by someone else... but that would at least make SOME sense, military intelligence.... Well “Obama Intelligence” at any rate...

The military is obliged to care for those who become sick or injured after joining. However, people already needing medical care are not enlisted until the medical situation is resolved. Basic training is no place for the”SLL” (Sick, Lame, or Lazy).

I have ultimate respect for those who serve, but here’s the bottom line: The military DOES NOT EXIST to serve the soldier, the military exists to serve the country....If you feel the need to “express yourself”, the military isn’t the place to do it.

There was a screening process for this sort of thing when I enlisted in 1974. There was a guy in my basic training flight that couldn't handle it and claimed that he was gay and he was let go from the service. I didn't get the details about his discharge though.
