As America reels from yet another mass shooting, inevitable questions resurface about guns laws and the nation's pervasive firearm culture. Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.
While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

"Louisiana comes in at number 10, with 15.1 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 69,668 registered firearms among 4,625,470 people."
And gun-poor Texas is only the 18th most armed state:
"Texas comes in at number 18, with 12.8 guns on record for every 1,000 residents. That's 337,309 firearms among 26,448,193 people. In fact, the actual numbers are probably higher because Texans are not required by law to register their firearms. As such, the ATF can only count those who seek background checks."
Both states are beat by D.C., which comes in at No.2:
"The District of Columbia comes in at number two in the nation, with 66.4 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 42,897 registered firearms dispersed among only 646,449 people."
I am not sure how accurate CBS is. I live in Louisiana, and I know individual people here who have more than 15.1 guns each.
Anyway, for your viewing pleasure!
(PS: Don't nobody run squealing to CBS about how bad they are off on the numbers, OK???)
DC? Fedguv, or private? Seems an act of Congress is required for private.
America reels from yet another mass shooting? I feel pretty steady today, standing with my guns and ready for whatever comes my way.
Figures don’t include Fast and Furious, so its invalid.
Interesting and not what I would have expected on the low end.
This is an extremely worthless article. From their methodology. While the ATF’s National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive.
In other words, the only thing they did is count NFA firearms which is almost nil.
Thank God for the U.S. Constitution and its RIGHTFUL protections.
The key word here is “Registered”. CBS can’t possibly do an accurate poll when they have no bloody idea how many unregistered guns are out there.
In other words, their data came from NFA weapons, not handguns, hunting guns, or even AR15’s (with the exception of non-pinned suppressor AR’s with 14.5 and shorter barrels. They counted no handguns, no hunting rifles, no shotguns (except short barreled NFA), in other words about 99% of the guns in existence aren’t included in their “data”. It would be about the same as counting percentage of Dem voters, while only counting LBTQ’s.
True. But my goodness how badly the numbers are off! Even in Alaska, the numbers were just blatantly ridiculous.
Idaho, only number 6? I am outraged! I’d comment further but I gotta go buy another gun. BBL
GA at number 13 is probably a conservative ranking as a significant number of gun sales here are private transactions.
The story is fake news. Registered guns may be an easy way to count guns but it is not accurate. NRA and others have numbers of over one gun per person.
Americans Have Bought Over 100 Million Guns During Obama’s Presidency
Fake News!
This has to be one of the most flawed and most inaccurate studies I have ever seen. First of all, it mentions registered guns. Most states do not have a requirement to register. And if you add up all the guns listed for each state, it only totals a few million. So you’ve got about 300 million firearms not accounted for. #FakeStudyCBS
Are you reeling? Anyone? I'm not.
All I see are pictures, no list.
Same here.
Same here in Indiana. It’s just like Lay’s potato chips, you can’t have just 1 or 10 or 15.....
Does this count those weapons currently resting on the bottom of the nation’s waterways? We here at FreeRepublic are well aware of the notorious lack of seamanship and boating skills of weapon owners ...
