Butler County Sheriff: My deputies won't use Narcan

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones said his deputies don't use Narcan now and never will under his watch, despite its effectiveness in reversing the effects of heroin overdoses.

He is the only southwestern Ohio sheriff whose department doesn't use it.

Deputies in Hamilton, Clermont and Warren counties all carry Narcan.

Drug overdoses continue to be the leading cause of death in Butler County, according to the coroner, and the county is on track to break last year's record for the highest number of overdose deaths.

Well, I’ve got to admit. This is a great, almost foolproof way of discouraging recidivism.

Does society have an obligation to save individuals from their own repeated, chronic self-destructive behavior?

Seems to me that the deputies should have some on hand in case they are accidentally exposed to fentanyl.

The stuff is expensive, isn't it? Besides, if someone willingly ingests an illegal, source-unknown, substance, they are agreeing to a possible death sentence from it.

Let them die. At least if it was legal, a legitimate company could be sued for damages.

This is the county where I live. I don’t have a problem with this, to be honest.

A tough call, but we can't just let people die unnecessarily, even if it is due to their own stupidity. Maybe the answer is at least to hold repeaters financially liable for the costs of saving their wretched lives. Make them pay their own way at least.

I vote No

I’m interested in the protocol of all this. If I call 911 & request an ambulance for a medical emergency, I wouldn’t be expecting the police to show up. Why are they responding to such calls?

NO! And to make sheriff’s deputies into EMT’s isn’t part of their job description. We don’t ask LEO’s to treat other maladies, they are supposed to call for medical assistance. Yeah, they need to provide emergency first responder care to people who have been injured, but treating overdoses should not be a requirement.

I strongly disagree. If people choose to become addicts to illegal dangerous drugs, they basically become wards of the state, "customers", if you will. Why? Because they cost taxpayers endless $$$ - CPS, LE, First Responders, HUD, EBT and on and on and on and on. They all commit crimes, over and above selling and buying drugs. Many of them sell their children, I learned a lot about the drug life from a neighbor whose step daughters got into heroin and meth. Refused all efforts to get out of the drug life, sold their children for porn and pedophiles, and are basically customers of every gov service you can possibly imagine.

Sooner or later, they have be held personally responsible for their OWN choices.

The problem is beyond comprehension in OH. I can't help but wonder if too-easy-access to medical care and pain killers has had an overall bad impact on vulnerable populations, hooking them on a high they can't recover from.

The gov wants to spend billions of dollars to cure addiction. But there are no reliable studies about what if anything will be effective to cure addiction. Many people are reaching the point of saying that only the addict through will power can bring about a cure. How do we know more rehab won't cause more addicts to feel it's okay to put off giving up their habit?

Narcan has saved lives for individual situations, a lot of them. But overall? Heroin deaths have increased. People now feel safer because there's a way to reduce reactions. It's enabled them to be involved in even riskier behaviors.

What's the answer? I get it that a lot of people are saying "enough". The addict has to be held accountable, or the addiction cycle will not be broken.

An overdose is not dying unnecessarily. It is dying because of natural consequences of drug use. We most certainly can let them die

How is a drug addict going to pay the cost?

Gonna get blood out of a turnip, are we? You’ll be the first to achieve that. Hold them accountable, eh? Try holding your breath, instead. Here in PA, there’s talk of a 3 strikes rule, because of recidivism. I’d say one time’s enough. OD a second time, they’re on their own.
