Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has agreed to open a $380 million home appliance manufacturing plant in South Carolina, the United States, it said on Wednesday.
The South Korean firm said this year it was in talks to build a home appliances plant in the United States amid worries about protectionist policies under U.S. President Donald Trump put pressure on global companies to generate jobs in the country.
Asia's biggest company by market capitalization said in a statement that the new plant in Newberry County, South Carolina is expected to generate 954 local jobs by 2020.
In February, President Trump tweeted "Thank you, @samsung! We would love to have you!" in reference to the possibility of a new Samsung plant.
"With this investment, Samsung is reaffirming its commitment to expanding its U.S. operations and deepening our connection to the American consumers, engineers and innovators," Samsung Electronics America President and CEO Tim Baxter said.
In March home appliances rival LG Electronics Inc announced a $250 million plan to build a factory in Tennessee.
Trump is set to host South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the White House on June 29-30 to advance economic cooperation and discuss ways of strengthening the two countries' "ironclad" alliance, the White House said this month.

I’ll never buy another Samsung appliance as long as I live. I don’t care where the hell they make them.
I’d much prefer to buy a Samsung made in South Carolina to a Frigidaire made in Mexico.
My experience with them has been the same - I would never buy another.
Samsung makes great phones and tv’s, but their appliances suck. Won’t ever buy one again.
Then there's GE and the opposite diagnosis....Their appliances are excellent...but their electronics stink.

And that's as it should be. If major foreign manufacturers want to sell the US, they should produce in the US rather than in the cheapest labor nations they can find. Tariffs work and it's beyond nonsense to pretend that the cheapest consumer price is the ultimate goal, as so many globalists pretend. And the threat of tariffs also works.
And when US corporations seek the world's cheapest labor, all those "savings" show up in unemployment benefits and then in many of the means tested government poverty programs.
Good luck with your $3000 disposable refrigerator with constantly breaking parts. Especially after 5 years when they stop making ‘plastic doodad number 84’ for your freezer door, so you can’t replace it when it breaks.

Many thanks for the heads-up. I have a Hecho en Mexico Frigidaire currently. No complaints, but I'd have preferred something made in USA.
I've been looking at the Samsung washers and dryers at Lowes. Any comment? I imagine they have the same problems as the Samsung refrigerators.

Why can’t GE and other USA appliance makers stay in the USA and make a profit?
I actually do have a Samsung washer/dryer and they’ve been much better (knock on wood) than the fridge. I don’t know if I just ended up with a lucky good batch or not, but in 7 years, I have only had the repair guy out once for a simple repair on the washer door closure. I’ve heard tales of woe from others. I wouldn’t buy another set mostly because the experience with the fridge was so unbelievably bad.
That said, I really don’t know if any other brands are any better these days. Maybe they aren’t. Maybe the days of these items lasting any decent amount of time before requiring replacement are over.

Never mind—between Greenville and Columbia on 26—a great location, also easy transport to Charleston Ports.
From Housewife: I love my Samsung refrigerator. Almost ten years old. Has freezer drawer with ice maker—also an ice maker in frig part with water filter. The two ice makers are VERY nice to have!!
Wow. I didn’t know Samsung made a Frig that expensive! I love mine and paid less than half that, but I am a determined bargain hunter. Always watching the closeouts and planning major purchases months in advance.
Mine is heading on to eight years— and yes, the plastics on the inside are showing wear and tear. Epoxy glue, super glue and duct tape.
