My mom-in-law’s family was Swedish. Came through Ellis Island. Her family became fluent in English in one generation. Go figure.
Ditto my Dad's family...Ireland...Gaelic...yet my Dad's boss,a billionaire, came to my Mom's funeral. And some years later my Dad attended that same billionaire's funeral.
My mom’s family from Budapest Hungary. Same here. In fact, my great-grandmother spoke perfect English.
My grandmother and her siblings were first generation born here. Their parents were from Norway. The older generation spoke mostly Norwegian, but g’ma and her siblings were punished for using Norwegian as everyday language. They were expected by the older generation to be American.
Speaking English was more-or-less requisite to survival then. They were also proud to be Americans and didn’t intend to be Swedish anymore.
Assimilation, speaking a common language and being proud to become a US Citizen are no longer part of the scheme.
