Check the varying speed of the cargo ship. Why would it be at cruising for several hours, come to a near DEAD stop for a short time then up to cruising speed, back down to a near dead stop for several hours, then back up to full speed less than an hour before impact??

We spent two hours once searching the ship for a Seaman Rackio, during an ‘abandon ship’ drill. Til the LPO at Rack10 realized his muster card had a misspelling on it, and Rackio was Rack10, not the first person listed on the muster card.

I understand about the darkness and weather and pitching seas, I stood lookout watches in another life. What I was driving at was - have we come to rely so much on dependable technology that someone decided a man with his own eyes isn’t necessary anymore? Kinda like cabooses on trains.

Having made this transit up Sagami Bay to Yokosuka numerous times as XO and Navigator, I can assure you that both the Capt and Navigator were on the bridge. At times we would have 50 plus radar contacts that we were watching. It was a very stressful home coming to our home port. It is likely that the freighter had minimal watch standers and lookouts. A Naval vessel sails blacked out with only running lights on. It is possible the vessel overtook the Fitz and they didn’t react in time to get out of the way.

Forgive me. But, I am wondering how many on the bridge were female/LGBTQ ...

I saw this in the Breaking sidebar, and opened it, dreading what the rest of the story might be, but hoping for the best. What I found was some of my fellow FReepers making light of the situation, and trying to be humorous. I still don’t know more than what’s in the headline.

I’ll find the rest of the story elsewhere. I shouldn’t have to. I used to be able to get a good overview of the day’s news, right here, without wading through a sea of irrelevant or misleading comments. It didn’t used to be common for FReepers to use the possible deaths of American military personnel as a backdrop for their dry humor.

I appreciate the many good FReepers who still provide quality content here. It’s a shame some people have to foul the nest.

How the heck does a Navy ship get T-boned by a freaking container ship? Since the damage is restricted to the center of the ship it looks like the Navy ship wasnt moving at the time. In the age where both ships have radar, radios, running lights, lookouts etc this should be near impossible.

How the Hell does a Navy ship that can track hundreds of surface and airborne targets, run into, or get in the way of, a frigg’n container ship?

In addition to all those really expensive sensors; It should have the advantage of speed and maneuvering!

There will obviously have to be an investigation but I would guess the Captain’s career is over if he survives the incident. Prayers are being sent for all of the crew.

What level in the hierarchy would be required for an officer to be given such a responsibility? (Sorry, I just have no knowledge of military structure in any of the service branches.)

"...I can't think of any legit reason so many people and systems could have failed..."

Incompetency. Poor training. Spending time on gender sensitivity training and planning for homosexuality advocacy instead of navigation and war fighting.

I pray for anyone hurt or missing, but this is an embarrassing shame for the United States Navy.

At least it is a preferable wake up call than an actual war.

I couldn’t make it this far in reading this thread, but a who did had this to say to me:

Post 104 helps explain the complexities of navigating in the area of the shipwreck. Post 109 helps explain what a wreck some of the so-called freepers are making of FR.

Couldn’t agree with more.

Another thing that’s bothering me, is the widespread acceptance of the media’s claim that the destroyer collided with the cargo ship, when all the available evidence suggests it was the other way around. And I’m finding a disturbing lack of curiosity for the facts, as FReepers rush to place all the blame on our Navy personnel.

“I wonder who had the deck.”

It was 0220. Routine transit in friendly waters.

It was some girl LTJG.

And the skipper will lose his career over it, or his refusal to put unqualified people at the helm.

His choice.

The problem is the SEVEN missing.
