Organizers Cancel Portland’s June 10 March Against Sharia (Jun 4 Free still happening)

Scott Ryan Presler, co-host of the June 10 March Against Sharia, took to the event's Facebook page earlier today to announce that the march has been canceled.

Presler announced that the cancellation of the June 10 rally is, "due to Mayor Wheeler's inflammatory comments and what we feel is an incitement of violence, he has shamefully endangered every scheduled participant."

The June 10 anti-Sharia law march was one of the events that Wheeler sought to see canceled. The other was a June 4 pro-Trump, free speech rally, also planned for Schrunk Plaza. That event has not been canceled.

Anyone planning on going to the Sunday Free Speech rally. I am thinking about it, but am concerned about the possibility of violence, as I was planning on going with my wife and kid.

Mayor Wheeler: Sunday's alt-right rally will go on as planned

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said a scheduled rally organized by an alt-right group will go on this Sunday after he urged the federal government to revoke the event's permit earlier this week.

The U.S. General Services Administration said it had no basis to revoke the already approved permit because the applicant submitted the appropriate form and followed all rules and regulations in the application process.

Wheeler said local and federal law enforcement will be at the event to maintain order.

"We have reached out to to the organizers to call on them to exercise common sense and to help us keep the peace," Wheeler said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon. "I urge everyone participating to reject violence. Our city has seen enough."

The "Trump Free Speech Rally" is scheduled for Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Terry D. Schrunk Plaza.

A second event was scheduled for June 10, but the "March Against Sharia" rally has been moved from Portland to Seattle on the same day.

A little free advice to the Portland Police and protest leader(s):

Keep the two groups separate (even if the anti-free-speech side doesn’t have a permit, they will be there). Use barricades. Distance is not enough of a deterrent.

Armbands for the leaders, and participants must obey the leaders. No provoking the other side. Leaders should instruct their group ahead of time. There is a tendency for people to want their picture in the paper.

Stop the violence at the first sign it is going to start, e.g. if someone approaches the other side aggressively even if he or she had not assaulted anyone yet.

Have enough men to enforce the law. Bring in neighboring police forces if you think you need them.

Portland mayor and police commissioner: Do not instruct your police to stand down. If you do, and there is violence that is not controlled by the cops because of stand down orders, it is on your soul.
