Those of us of a certain age have a real attachment with Hawaii.
We defended her when Japan attacked. We celebrated when she officially became a state in 1959. And we dreamed of vacations on her picturesque beaches.
We also remember those commercials about sweet Hawaiian sugar for which the islands were synonymous.
Not anymore.
Hawaii stopped producing sugar entirely in December, after more than a century in the business. Not because Hawaii isn't good at producing sugar it was one of the best. It's because Mexico violated United States trade laws, dumped subsidized sugar on the market, distorted prices, and helped drive Hawaiian sugar producers out of business.

This should be interesting.
Hawaii is a communist state to do business in and the sugar plantations have been disappearing for years.
It should be “adios” , not “aloha”.
The landowners probably figured out they can make more money selling condos to Japanese and Silicon Valley millionaires..............
Mexico has found a way around that? Good.
Hawaii is finding it hard to compete, without protectionist tariffs and price controls? Good.
Protectionist sugar policy cost Americans $3 billion in 2012
Sugar cane fields everywhere, unused. Climate and soil good for growing fermentable crops of all kinds. No petroleum anywhere around, all imported, so a great spot for ethanol production. And it's so trendy, renewable and earth-friendly. It's a mystery to me....
And guess what? They were right. When I read years ago that “natives” weren’t happy with “Howlies” over running “their land” it occurred to me that cutting them loose might not only be a better answer but teach them a bit of a lesson. How is it racism against white people is so well tolerated I America?
Sell Hawaii to the Japs and see how that racism thing goes.
“Pure Cane Sugar.....
.
.
.
From Hawaii....”
Doesn’t Mexican sugar just sound better? Wait, maybe that refers to something else...
I live for the day I first see the graffiti “Yankee come back”.
In the meantime there is always the humble sugar beet.
One of my favorite C&H Sugar commercials
1984 - - - 30 seconds

The candy makers went to Mexico because of the U.S. sugar tarriffs
Florida has a big sugar lobby
The US government has been subsidizing Midwestern sugar beet farmers for decades and has limited imports of foreign sugar. The result is that US consumers have been paying above world market prices for sugar. High sugar prices caused many manufacturers to switch from cane sugar to cheaper high fructose corn syrup. Ironically corn farmers are also heavily government subsided and the government funded corn ethanol boondoggle has now boosted corn prices. Reagan said it best...” markets work, governments don’t “
How is it racism against white people is so well tolerated I America?
Easy. We have been conditioned to think that ‘racism’ is the most evil thing one can be accused of, ergo, white people will not criticize or complain when a ‘minority’ does something that is ‘culturally different’ than theirs, including reverse racism...................
So Hawaii’s “native” son turned a blind eye to the violation and let Mexico go unpunished, thereby destroying Hawaiian sugar. Sweet.
I don’t care for Mexico’s other export, either.
Oh, anx I don’t believe Mexico killed sugar production in Hawaii.
Just as here in what is currently called Silicon Valley, land for housing is extraordinarily profitable for housing and business parks.
When I was growing up there were farms everywhere and green houses.
The largest mustard growth in California was recently over run with 1500 apartments and a large neighborhood type mall.
Where once stood greenhouses are now apartments, homes, business parks and another large neighborhood type mall.
Farms? Ditto.
So, The Valley of Heart’s Delight, a motto that once signified strong ties to farming is no more.
The same with The Garlic Capital of the World in Gilroy. It use to be but, there are only 30 actual acres of garlic grown there anymore.
The Chinese Elephant Garlic has replaced Gilroy garlic as have the many, many beautiful new homes.
Things change....
I’ll still be buying Imperial Sugar, as always.
Same thing with pineapples ... and papayas.
Mexican pineapples and papayas are not nearly as good as Hawaiian ones.
As for sugar, most of the sugar on the market is made from beets, not cane. If it doesn’t say cane sugar on the package its probably from beets and is, in my opinion, inferior sugar.
