Keep Free Republic up and running (Vanity)

Posted on 05/19/2017 7:46:49 AM PDT by cpdiii

While Free Republic was down I read some snarky remarks about Free Republic and Jim Rob on Facebook.

Free Republic is supported 100% by our donations. The reason we do not have the best and top of the line servers and backup servers is money.

If Jim Rob were to make this a commercial site he would retire an extremely rich man. If it was a commercial site it would be like Breitbart. On Breitbart you wade through tons of ads and popups!

Hundred of thousands of people visit Free Republic. If just a small percentage became monthly donors there would be no Freepathons and Free Republic would have state of the art equipment.

Become a monthly donor as I. Even it is just a few dollars it all counts.

This place is a way better place to have freerepublic than facebook for many reasons.

Ooops!!!

Should have checked the size before posting.

But hey, don’t all dictators love large images of themselves?

Hardware is expensive and has a limited lifespan. I’m curious to know if Jim and John have priced out the cost of hosting freerepublic.com in the cloud on AWS or Azure? There would be huge reliability gains to be made by going that route and a lot of convenience, too.

Maybe I should default to a “600” and call it a day...

LOL

Everything is a 2-edged sword.

Reliability gains, etc. would be offset by a Bezos-type stooge mining our data, causing 'accidental' disruptions, privacy issues, etc.

There's no such thing as a cloud. It is just outsourcing to let somebody else manage your infrastructure.

And the total cost of operation would be a lot less I'd be willing to wager.

There is no service I pay as much for as FreeRepublic. I love JR; meeting him was a huge highlight of my life. But I still would like to know what guarantee re operation we have on this site for donating. I still would like an app so I can actually see what I am writing when freeping on a phone.

This doesn’t happen to other sites. I’m not ok with it. Donating more than I do is not currently an option but I do whatever I can. And if it really is $350k a year, I believe a site that has built in redundancy and some way to easily use it on mobile devices would be possible. I know people who run different sites who don’t make anywhere near that.

There have been ads using What would you do if there were no FR, and we’ve answered that call, and yet there was no FR. Which makes me want to donate LESS. I’d like to know that my donation would actually help modernize FR.

I have ad blocker and don’t see any ads or popups on Breitbart.

They need to get away from an antiquated support model and move to the cloud.

I’ll keep up my usual monthly.

Pinging a frequent user from the Great White North to kick in a few dollars for some upgrades.

Should be hearing back any minute.

Any minute.

(Was that wrong?)

Sean Anthony isn’t a real person. It’s nothing more than a software script that automatically posts blogs. The clue is no replies from “Sean”...ever.
