I was raped. Thanks to Republicans, I could be denied insurance for surviving
San Francisco Chornicle ^ | May 5, 2017 | by Carly Mee, The Washington Post

When I learned that the most recent version of the American Health Care Act allows insurers to classify rape as a preexisting condition (and thus puts survivors at risk for increased costs and denial of coverage), my initial inclination was to pull out a calculator.

I started typing in numbers. After an older student chose to rape me during my second week in college, the bills had quickly started piling up. I paid for doctors' visits, weekly therapy appointments and medication to treat my PTSD, anxiety and depression. I had medical insurance at the time, but that only covered part of the expenses. I had tried to avoid thinking about the number of bills I was receiving from medical providers because it stung too much. I hadn't chosen to bear these costs, and every penny I spent was a reminder that I didn't have a say in any of this -- the rape itself, as well as the aftermath.

If rape survivors are now denied insurance coverage, it will become impossible for them to heal, effectively burdening those who are already suffering the most. Many rape survivors cannot pay the significant expenses incurred in the aftermath. They need assistance without being forced to pay a premium for their trauma and denied coverage altogether.

Lawmakers have a responsibility to reject bills that inappropriately rely on our status as survivors to diminish our worth. Our suffering cannot be reduced to a "preexisting condition" that allows insurers to turn us away at will.

Mee is a staff attorney at SurvJustice, where she provides direct legal representation to survivors of sexual violence in civil, campus and criminal systems.

I wonder if Ms Mee used her calculator to see if she could afford Obamacare premiums, or if her rape expenses met an $8,000 annual deductible.

She should ask the rapist to pay her medical expenses. Why should we bail out rapists?

We could always ask if there needs to be some provision for crime victims like this. But surely Obamacare shouldn’t have to even pretend to cover this?

Nearly ALL universities provide pretty cheap medical insurance...

But she already knew that.

If rape survivors

Rape survivors?

Is rape typically fatal?

Wouldn't it be "murder" or something if fatal?

People die choking on ham sandwiches.
If I eat a ham sandwich, am I a ham sandwich survivor?

Just like 99% of the incidents of KKK,anti pervert and anti moslem graffiti eventually prove to be fake I'd wager that this dame's story is fake as well.

Some places do have crime victim relief provisions, which are later recovered from the perpetrator if caught. If she’s willing to swear out a complaint on penalty of perjury, I have no problem with a government agency doing that.

Could be a slippery slope, because victims of car accidents, sports injuries, etc. would end up getting in this line. (”victims” being the key word)

If it can pretty clearly be delineated between act of God and act of man, there should be no need to worry about doing the cosmically right thing.

Reason.com has an excellent refutation of this blatantly dishonest talking point.
Rape is always considered an emergency and is covered. If she had bills piling up it was because she hadn’t met her deductibles for the year.
If it even happened. I never take a lefties word for anything any more.

I had a doctor explain pre existing condition to me once.

He said most of it was BS as life itself can be construed as a pre existing condition, and anything that happened to you once you were born was because you were alive.

He always checked “no” when a form asked if the condition was pre existing.
