FACEBOOK has come under fire over revelations it is targeting potentially vulnerable youths who “need a confidence boost” to facilitate predatory advertising practices. The allegation was revealed this morning by The Australian which obtained internal documents from the social media giant which reportedly show how Facebook can exploit the moods and insecurities of teenagers using the platform for the potential benefit of advertisers.

Facebook is evil. I could not think of a better platform to turn otherwise productive people into resentful zombies.

FB is just as evil as Google.

Never used fb, probably never will. I get what it was intended for but it has been abused not only by subscribers but now by the very people that brought it to the public. Yes I agree, evil is an apt word for it.

I use facebook. I am fully aware they gather data on me as well as those in my friends list. I learned early that they “watch” what is entered and then try to place ads related to those entries.

Which is why I will put in my time line wrong information. Talk about places I have never been or in some case never want to go.

Once I did a google search on my name. I saved the photos to my computer and then up loaded them all to my facebook page tagged with my (and their) name - the information was correct but it must play hell with their facial recognition.

I treat facebook the same as I would as if I was in a public space. In other words I do not tell any deep dark secrets nor post naked photos or even discus controversial subjects.

I stay away from liking anything - this is how they get a profile on you.

Facebook gathers and sells information, same as credit cards, same as courtesy cards, same as magazine subscriptions and so on. Nothing they do is new, except they have bigger computers to store data.

Don’t like facebook - don’t use it.

But if you are concerned about your private life, then don’t use a credit card, don’t use courtesy cards, don’t subscribe to any magazine, don’t attend any school, don’t get a drivers license, don’t own a vehicle, and don’t ever use a computer. Because if you do, they got you.

Welcome to the Brave New World like it or not, you are already in somebody’s database.

There is a lot of skullduggery out there. There is a song library/referral service that, I believe, mines the internet for music posted by songwriters on their list, gins up fake commercial calls for music fitting THAT ODDLY EXACT DESCRIPTION. There is a charge for them presenting your music to buyers. I don’t think the calls actually exist.

I tried FB about 4 years ago. When I signed up they wanted access to my email account address listing. I refused.

By coincidence they started listing everyone in my address list as a friend. They had absolutely no way of knowing who I associate with - legally that is.

What was creepy is one person in my address book was stalking me and made threats on my life. They repeatedly suggested shes a friend, or potential friend or however they worded it back then.

So I shut my account down and have never been back.

Facebook is also seeking to sell ads to users concerned with insights gleaned from posts such as those concerned with body confidence and losing weight.

I was watching TV with my family, in our livingroom — someone mentioned getting a pizza delivered, and instantly, an ad for a local pizza shop popped up. We physically removed the microphone from the remote control after that. The media companies are listening to us, and if they are listening to us, so is the government.

I complained to my husband about not being able to find a certain brand of socks. Now I have ads on Facebook and elsewhere for the best socks on the market. Haha. I do not have the Facebook app on my phone. And yet Facebook hears what I am saying in my car and living room.

Have I ever downloaded Facebook to my phone? Yes. But I deleted it almost immediately.

“Facebook is evil. I could not think of a better platform to turn otherwise productive people into resentful zombies.”

It’s also a frightfully dangerous potential family destroyer when placed in the hands of teenagers, teenagers being incapable of keeping their mouths shut. If either parent is in the middle of a career crisis where it’s imperative that confidentiality be maintained, there’s a good chance that a child who knows about it will be doing daily posting on her Facebook account, all the the great, potentially disastrous, effects on her parents’ future.

Vast numbers of otherwise incidental things can be posted by one’s children that can later be looked up and used against the parent. Indeed, one of the smartest things any attorney who is retained to represent a client in a bitter matter, divorce and human resources cases being a the top of the list, is committing potential malpractice if he or she does not immediately review all Facebook, Twitter and other public social media accounts of the opponent, the opponent’s spouse, and the opponent’s children. Vast treasures of potentially damaging information will be turned up in many cases. Such reviews are also a great idea for anybody in a difficult professional or political situation at work.

IOW, the generally smartest thing to do is avoid Facebook and Twitter like the plague, unless you know EXACTLY what you’re doing.
